The Mammut Eiswand Advanced Hooded Jacket is a robust, durable, very versatile and warm mid-layer made from high-quality Pontetorto Merino Tecnowool, used for its smooth finish outer and internal waffle structure for comfort and temperature regulation. It has excellent breathability thanks to thin mesh material under the arms and the antibacterial effect of the wool, which limits unpleasant odors. The Eiswand Advanced Hooded Jacket can also be used as an outer layer and as an insulating layer underneath a weatherproof jacket.

The Eiswand Advanced Jacket features flat seams for a high level of comfort and to avoid chafing under the backpack. The main zipper is YKK Vislon which runs smoothly. There are two hand pockets which sit high so they do not interfere with a harness. The cuffs are elasticated and feature flat thumb loops.

Given the price and manufacturers reputation this fleece is disappointing. The cuffs are not elasticated nor can they be sealed with velcro tabs. There is no drawcord for the waist hem. The windproof fabric is confined to the hood, outer sleeves and lower hem. As I run very hot I wore this fleece with nothing underneath at 8C. It worked reasonably well until I was in the wind, which punched straight through the chest fabric chilling me. Once static the fleece held the generated warmth for about 15 minutes. Wicking was not good and I had to open the front zip completely to dry off. Not welcome at 10C. Not sure how I will use this in the future. Disappointing and for me at least, 3 stars is a little generous. I do like the chest pockets.
