You probably won't need the spare parts because of a breakage, more for extra support should you want it. Not everybody is under 12 stone and if you wanted to add a heavy mattress for say a spare bed at home or car camping the extra support keeps the cot more taught. I use the 8 hoop with double pole configuration for maximum support on the thermarest mesh cot. Having the XL I found the extra partstightened up everything with an outwell dreamboat and my bodyweight its a fair old weight these extra parts gave me more confidence for a good nights sleep. The spares don't wiegh much you won't really notice the extra when it's all packed away inside the stuff sack provided with the cot. Should you break something the extras will come in handy.

As the original bed came from new with two feet and spares missing, I had to purchase two to make the correct amount. The bed is over a year old and I can't remember where I purchased it from. I didn't realise two were missing, until a friend showed me his.
