The Arcteryx Womens Gamma MX Hoody is one of the most popular softshell jackets on the market. The softshell fabric used is a pleasure to wear as it is incredibly soft to the touch yet highly weather resistant and hardwearing. Ideally suited for mountaineering, alpine climbing, ski touring and all-round mountain use it's a very versatile piece of kit.
Fortis softshell fabric has been used throughout the jacket. Membrane free and air permeable the fabric is highly breathable, durable and wind resistant. It also has a DWR finish to ensure that snow and moisture is easily shed, so you can keep your hardshell in your pack for only the worst weather. The fabric is backed with a mid-weight fleece to give an extra bit of warmth to the jacket, without making it bulky. With a four-way stretch, combined with the relaxed fit, it makes the jacket very comfortable to wear.
The Womens Gamma MX Hoody has an articulated cut to allow exceptional freedom of movement with gusseted underarms and the long hip length fit allows a climbing harness to be comfortably worn over the top preventing any gaps in your weather protection. The Arcteryx StormHood is fully helmet compatible fitting over any helmet whether skiing or climbing and when on it's quickly adjusted to fit neatly, keeping the weather at bay. Four different pockets gives you plenty of flexibility for essential items, and all are accessible whilst wearing a harness or rucksack hip-belt.

This is the second Gamma MX I am buying. It is an all around jacket, as long as you stay active. It is not very wind or water resistant, the aim is not to keep you warm, but to keep you protected from the elements while you are active out there. You can move freely while wearing it, it has more elasticity than most soft cells, and it is really flattering, which is important for any girl around the globe! The colour (black) makes it suitable for walks around town as well as hiking or trekking, and it is packable (less than 500 grams). I intend to use it for my hikes during the Spring in Greece, when the weather is rather unstable, and there is always a chance of raining for a quarter or so. The four pockets the jacket has are ok, I would prefer hand-warmer pockets though, but now you can use them for extra ventilation if you open the pocket zip during a hike. I really like the chest pocket, It fits my iphone, and I can actually listen to it whenever it rings. If I could choose, I would like the Gamma MX to be a little more warm. The soft fleece layer on the inside is not really adding any warmth to the jacket. Of course, you can always wear another thin layer underneath it - this is if you buy a size up.
Sizing is a little on the big side - I usually wear Large, but an Arcteryx Medium suits me best. If you want to buy the jacket, try to find a sale price, otherwise it is too pricey. Of course, you get what you pay for, and make no mistake: this one is a great jacket. You can use it all day long, go for a hike, get in a restaurant, walk the dog, move around town, whatever. It feels like it adjusts to the temperature around you, to keep you protected. So, go for it.
This jacket is excellent. I own the men's version and my wife kept borrowing it, so I finally bought her the women's. Fits perfectly for her. She's 5"11" and the L is just the right size: long on the arms, somewhat fitted, but can fit a sweater underneath easily and not too long, but enough to cover her lower back if she leans forward. Like all Arcteryx products, superb quality and the softshell is so comfy.
