The Thermarest Basecamp Mattress is luxury that can be carried in your pack. Though it is heavier and bulkier than the mattresses in the Trek and Trail series. But as the name suggests it is ideal if you are treking to camp in one spot for several nights and you want a good level of comfort.
Thermarest have made use of 5 cm thick expanded and die-cut foam that provides great comfort and reduces materials by 25%. It's this reduction that makes the mat compressible and light enough to trek to your Basecamp. Esssentialy what Thermarest have done is to produce a luxury version of their classic mattress that has all round appeal whether you're car camping or doing some short treks.

Thermarest Basecamp Mattress Review

The only camping mat I own which is actually long enough for me (and I'm only 6'2"). Nice and comfortable, but wouldn't consider carrying it anywhere as it is far too heavy. Basically an air-bed replacement, warmer and without the faff of pumping it up.

I bought this for use indoors, but in possibly poorly heated houses, for sleeping on the floor during visits. For this, it's perfect.
Rolls up into a sensible size, at least for my needs, which is carrying it out and sticking it in the back of the car. Might be a little large when rolled for backpacking.
Ideally needs to be stored flat, with the valves open. If this is done, then when it's rolled up for travel it will self-inflate nicely, with the option of one or two breaths in the valve to plump it up even further. Seconds, only, very handy.
I'm quite tall, and large, so got the XL and was a bit worried about whether it would be large enough. I needn't have worried, it's enormous. I'm also heavy, but even on a hard floor it was extremely comfortable.
Downsides: ideally it should be stored flat, to facilitate the "memory foam" and so it will auto-inflate properly when rolled. But as it's so large, storing it flat is quite hard. I put it in the loft, but that's a bit of a faff. It's too big to store under a normal double bed, for example (it's longer than a standard bed).
In summary, for my needs, which don't include ultra-portability, it is almost perfect.

I finally succumbed to the realisation that at my maturing age and tolerance level this would be a good purchase for a festival camping trip to Ukraine. My friend with serious back problems has been harping on about these for ages and I now know why. I chose the narrower and shorter one despite being wide myself and found I had the most comfortable nights of camping ever - I've been doing festivals for over 20 years so I've had plenty of practice!
