We used a weekend hill running in Wales to test various foods for use during a mountain marathon (specifically the OMM). Moving to as lightweight approach without being desperately uncomfortable or of course in danger - no bubble wrap and cold sleeping bags but sensible compromises. We had an eggs / potatoes / peppers meal each for breakfast on the Saturday morning - that's 800 calories each. Positives: The taste and texture was surprisingly good - the potatoe cubes (~1cm) tasted fried with a crisp exterior and soft interior (perhaps they were intended to be more hydrated but personally I Iiked the texture!), the peppers taste like peppers and the scrambled eggs taste like scrambled eggs. The volume of breakfast per person was large, and filling - all of the meals seemed to be very filling even while eating the meal. I think some people would have difficulty eating a whole 800 calorie sachet. So far so good - however the next thing to do after eating the breakfast on a mountain marathon is to run up (or at least down or across) a hill. The breakfast was so filling that was difficult - we tried immediately after eating and that wasn't going to happen. I would say allow an hour, or ninety minutes before trying high exertion (like jogging with a pack). I think walking (though it might feel like waddling) would be fine. The packs are also reasonable bulky (on a MM you usually have a 30litre sac each, with a sleeping, bag and a tent and being softies we have inflatable mattresses). In summary, very tasty, lightweight, consider using it as an evening (after exercise meal) or as emergency food. Alternatively I think one sachet between 2 (400 calories each) would be a better bet for breakfast if you're planning on high exertion (or contortion) exercise within an hour. Recommended.

Fantastic - probably better than Mountain House. We've tried both Porridge+Strawberry and Granola+Raspberries and both were great, with Granola being the favourite. We don't like things too sweet, and these were both good - not at all sickly as we expected, given the calorie count. The milk comes out very rich and creamy, and the fruit hydrates pretty well, although of course gets mushed up when you stir it. They come out nice even if you use too much water - a bit sloppy, but still very edible. Each flavour uses a different amount of water, which makes measuring a pain, so work that out in advance. Flavours that use less water obviously use up less gas to heat said water - the Granola is a smarter choice than Porridge in that regard.

These breakfasts are packed with calories and give you a much needed kick-start after a less than perfect night's sleep under canvas. I recently spent a long weekend training in Snowdonia and these meals were great - oats with blueberries is my favourite!

Just come back from a trip where we took 3 of these breakfasts. They are really big and were shared happily between two - I think it would have been a struggle to get a whole one down first thing. We took Granola with Raspberries, Porridge with Strawberries and Oats with Sultanas. Really didn't fancy trying the scrambled egg ;) The packaging worked nicely, with a sealable top. They rehydrated well too. The porridge and oats were fine, nothing special, how hard can it be to do. The porridge was a bit light on strawberries. The granola however was really good. I didn't know what to expect, but it was nice and crunchy in a very tick creamy sauce - quite different from the usual slop! A real winner this one - I will certainly be taking this one again next time.
