Arcteryx Gamma AR Pant (Winter 17)

The Arcteryx Gamma AR Pant is a great all rounder, offering moderate levels of warmth on cooler days in the mountains. They provide excellent mobility, by having a four way stretch and are perfect for climbing and trekking in the hills and mountains.

Constructed from Burly™ Double Weave fabric that is durable, abrasion resistant and also benefits from a DWR finish. This ensures that snow and moisture are shed, without compromising breathability. The waist has an internal brushed waistband, for added all day comfort and the trousers are fitted with an adustable webbing belt. The instep is seamless, to deter snagging and the boot/trouser seal is acheived from lace hooks and an adjustable static cord closure at the ankle area.

The Arcteryx Gamma AR Pant is truly a great three season pant, not only for alpine mountaineering, but also for rock climbing and trekking.

Good value for money, ideal for hiking.

Been using them for the past week around town and lasted well in close to 0C temperatures as well under rain.

I also like the integrated belt, which is easy to open.

They look good and stretch well, windproofing is fine, another quality product from Arcteryx.

I'm really pleased with these pants. Really hard wearing, great slim fit and very comfortable. I use these pants now for most of my fell walking in the Lake District and they'll be coming to Everest trekking with me next year. Another great purchase from Facewest.

All the usual attention to detail I've come to expect from Arc'products. These trousers run true to size, though the fit in the leg is very trim - great if you intend to wear them with crampons. The lace-hook at them bottom is a nice touch and the fact that is has a garage to tuck them away when not in use just shows how thought through this product is. Weight wise, these are probaby a little warm for UK summer use but I can see them making it into my summer Alpine setup. Material feels particularly burly - theses should last a good few seasons.

It took me a while to write the review after receiving my pair of Arcteryx Gamma AR Pants but I wanted to have used them at least once before writing a review. The fabric and construction are amazing. The fabric is not very warm but it will keep you comfortable in most cases down to the range of 10 to 0 degrees C. I wore it for a whole weekend in this temperature range with a base layer (Phase AR bottom) and had no problems at all. It has a nice trim fit but not super tight, just enough to make give a comfortable next to skin feel without compromising mobility in any way. Nice little details are the hook that catches on the boot laces along with a tightening cord so you can delay usage of gaiters in some terrains. Overall I am super happy with them, I bought them as my go to pants for 90% of the cases I d be in the mountains and I think I made the best choice I could. Some practical details: Previous reviews mention 4 pockets which I assume would be true for previous versions of the pants, my pants (late 2014) have 3 pockets one of them in the right thigh. If you are between sizes go with the smaller one or consult the facewest guys, they will guide you to the best possible choice.

I bought these pants for winter skating and backcountry skiing. The material is close to perfect for winter use: sturdy, yet stretchy and supple, and giving some warmth without the risk of overheating. The features are pretty much all you can ask for: a proper belt, two cosy zipped handwarmer pockets, two well-placed thigh pockets, articulated knees and drawcords to tighten up around the boots.

The fit is fairly tight around the ankles, but still roomy enough to squeeze around anything but your heaviest slalom boots. Higher up the fit loosens a bit, which provides for great movement but does not feel really necessary considering the stretch fabric. All in all a great pant for anything but summer use, but they could have been tighter around the bum and thighs.

Have had these for 2 seasons now, used for ice and alpine climbing, and walking around town. Very comfortable, good amount of pockets (4 in total all zipped). Being tall, the great thing is that they come also in long inseam versions. Fabric is really windproof, and does not absorb large amounts of water in wet conditions.

Cut of these pants is quite tight, but in my opinion could be tighter around thighs and butt - I think the idea is to not restrict the movement, but being stretchy fabric, these could be a bit more slim. I've punctured the fabric with crampons on few places, but haven't had to repair them, as they haven't become any bigger over time (the fabric is really tightly woven).

All in all, with a tighter cut, these would be perfect. But even in current form, my favourite all around softshell pant.

Reviewer: Nick Smith,

These are very similar in weight & warmth to the Mammut Base Jump Pants, but unlike the Mammut pants, these look very smart and aren't just for the crag/mountain.

A lack of side vents and the dark colour means they are also too warm for hot Summer days. However they are extremely comfortable, with good stretch when doing high-steps, etc. The two thigh side pockets are quite large, and easier to access & more comfortable than waist pockets if you're climbing/scrambling.

The pants taper down to a narrow ankle, which gives good protection from the wind, and a tight fit to your boots, but it doesn't have the flexibility of the Mammut pants with their zip + Velcro cuff at the ankles.
