The New Mountain Equipment Makalu Jacket is Mountain Equipment’s first venture into Gore’s new PFC-Free GORE-TEX ePE. This new waterproof / breathable membrane is made from expanded Polyethylene instead of the polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) used in all other GORE-TEX products. PTFEs are now understood to pose a range of environmental concerns and with the EU planning a ban on their use in the next couple of years Gore have rightly decided to move away from their use.
The Makalu follow’s Mountain Equipment’s standard mountain jacket formula; make it tough, give it plenty of pockets and try not to go crazy with the price. This formula just works. A combo of 50 denier recycled poly outer with 75 denier reinforcement is going to handle most year round hiking and mountaineering use. The RRP of £300.00 is actually on the lower end of the scale for GORE-TEX jackets these days.
