Customer Reviews of Ortlieb Map Case
The Ortlieb map case was nicely packaged and is well made. The plastic is soft and more transparent than previous map cases I have used. The seal is easy to open and looks as though it is very waterproof. I have not actually used it in the rain yet, so I can only go by first appearances but it certainly looks up to the task. The lanyard is a useful length, can be attached either side and is adjustable.
I have found that maps have to be folded quite flat and are best used with the cover removed in order to avoid the case being too bulky. Alternatively you could use a scanned copy of the area you are travelling. I can't be sure just how strong the plastic is but there is a five year warranty. Overall, this case is better than previous ones I have used.
Two months ago I lost my old Ortleib Map Case and replaced it with one from another brand only to find that the alternative was so badly designed that an OS Explorer map normally folded for reading would not fit into it. Even worse, the width of opening was narrower than of the body of the case, so,even if the body had been wide enough, it would still have beena struggle to get the folded map in...Orlieb to the rescue.
I bought another Orleib case. Now my folded map fits in with some room to spare and getting it in is easy because the opening is properly designed, i.e. at least as wide as the internal width of the body of the case.My old Ortleib map case was brilliant, except that the adhesive used to hold the Velcro to the transparent plastic failed quite early in its life cycle. That situation was eventually saved by my copious use of staples to hold the Velcro to the transparent plastic. Perhaps Ortlieb have by now found a more durable adhesive.
On the new ortleib case I found that fitting the neck-cord clips into the holes on the case was slightly difficult. Fortunately this is a once only process. I appreciate that we probably have to live with this as the hole size and the dimensions of the material around the hole are chosen for strength and reliability. The clips are possibly a catalogue item and so Ortleib have to take what is available so cannot optimise the clipfor their specific application. My rating is really for the old case as my recently purchased one has as yet seen very little use.
We've used a Silva map case for several years, but this broke when it had to be used as an impromptu sling when my wife broke her arm! The Ortlieb case is very basic for the price, although it has a great reputation.Initial impressions: good construction, flexible, transparent.Neck strap is not high quality for such a high level map case - just a nylon cord and none too long either. We've swapped over the strap from our old Silva map case, which is much longer and more fit for purpose.Just one outing in dry weather. The test will be a howling gale with driving rain on a Lakeland fell!
Bought this as a replacement for the previous one that only lasted me 40 years and which, after being used in the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Europe finally had the velcro seal glue come unstuck while trekking across Turkey in 40+ degrees. In all this time never let rain in however torrential. Most disappointing (joke).
I have been given other map casesover theyears and none except the Ortleib have kept tain out.Strange rubbery material which does go semi transparentafter a while but remains usable. I guess this new one will see me thru to the end of my daY's.If you want a map case this is the only make to buy.
I have been using an Ortlieb map case regularly for many years (more than 10) and it is still as good as new. These days I buy them as presents for walking friends. The latest purchase was for my husband who is addicted to 'fixing things' including his old broken-down map case. Perhaps this purchase will cure his addiction as this one will never need mending but will remain flexible and 100% waterproof for as long as he needs it. A folded OS paper map fits inside, is easily read, and stays dry even when out all day in pouring rain. A waterproof/laminated OS map will NOT fit in. Remains untorn even when buffetted by gale force winds on the moors and mountains. An excellent map case, well worth the money. No minus points.
This has a very good fold over velcro closure that will prevent water entry, better than the Silva case. Size will accomodate an os map folded to 10 x 8.5 inches ie twosquares.
Plastic is soft an easy to fold , much more flexible than my sea to summit case. The attachment points for the lanyard clips seem very thin however, but have to test long term.
I purchased this map case for walking throughout the UK, after my previous Outdoor Designs mapcase cracked.
I used it on a wet Bank Holiday weekend and was very pleased. The map case is lighter than those I have used previously, the closure is secure, it is easy to fit OS Maps in (without cutting the edges off them), and there is nothing to obscure your view of the map. It is a soft plastic so hopefully won't crack in the same way as my last one. Well worth the extra cost.
Got to say this is the best map case I have ever had, used it for the wow 100 last week end fed up of not being able to read map and route description no problem with this. fast and easy purchase and delivery from Facewest as usual thanks.
I am very pleased with these map case, much better than previous ones cheap I have used.100 % waterproof, after 6 hours of march under heavy rain the map is dry.Robustbut flexible and stays flexible even when it gets cold. You can fold it up andput in rucksack or jacket pocket, nothing damage or crinkle.
The size allow you see a good area of the map. I have never had any condensation inside the case, you need only flatten the air out of it before folding over the roll-top closure. The neck cord does not attach properly and keeps coming off (but I don't use it). This is the only weakness that I find. Thoroughly recommended.
Definitely the best map-case on the market. Proper bombproof bit of kit, unlike many others out there. It's totally waterproof (as would be expected of Ortlieb) and a good size for fitting a folded OS map. Material is soft, so won't crack like others in the cold. Overall a worthwhile investment as it will outlast any other map case out there.
This is probably the best map case you can get in my opinion. It is the only map case the Royal Marines instructors recommend buying, some have had theirs for over 15 years without needing replacement. They are very strong and don't stretch, discolour or crinkle. They seal up well and don't let any moisture in, the last thing you want is a wet map. I have ditched my Silva map case for this and I am positive that this will last well into the future; a top investment. Plus a great price and customer service from Facewest.
This is a great map case that is easy to use and completely waterproof.I purchased this for some serious outdoor hiking pursuits in all types of weather and have given it a few months of testing prior to this review. The case is made of a silicone type compound that is hard wearing yet doesn't mark/scratch easily. This enables it to maintain it's crystal clear transparency and makes it completely waterproof.Highly recommended and worth the extra few pounds. 'You get what you pay for' has never been more true.
I purchased this map case to carry my map when I am hill walking in all weathers. I like the fact that it is very light, and the soft plastic material means that it is very flexible. I also like the roll over flap which ensures that the map inside keeps dry in all weathers. My last map case was made of thicker plastic so wasn't so flexible. There is a larger version available but I feel that this size (27x27cm)is a good balance between being able to fit a Landranger or Explorer map but yet not too big to carry around your neck.
I previously ordered a similar item from another supplier and discovered that there was no drawstring attached (it was for a cyclist rather then a hiker). On the negative side the plastic hooks for the drawstring feel rather thin and I wonder how long they will last.Overall a good buy.
Having used other, cheaper brands for many years 'cos it's just a map case, yet another tore and had to be duct-taped up in the middle of Knoydart. which is an OK solution as long as you never need to use another map (or part of the map) other than the current one.
So, after seeing my (older and wiser) brother using an Ortlieb case, I thought I'd take the plunge, obviously checking Facewest for price which proved fruitful since it turned out to be only £12.50 inc. a modest loyalty bonus.
Used it at the weekend and it is, indeed just a map case, but it's also so much better than any other I've used - folds well without crinkling, appears tough as, and just, well, works.
So, buy cheap buy twice..yadda yadda yadda..(actually many many more times than that) but it's true. Yeah, just a map case but the best one out there as far as I know.
I purchased this map case upon recommendation from a friend.Although there are cheaper cases on the market I was assured I wouldn't be disappointed with the quality and it was worth spending a few pounds more. The case is very lightweight and the waterproof seal is great. The ability to flip the case across to just one sheet of a map and attach the cord to hold it together is a great feature and came in useful on a recent hike.I'm very happy and would say that the quality speaks for itself.Couple that with a hefty guarantee and you can't go wrong!
