Katadyn BeFree Softflask Filter

The Katadyn BeFree soft flask filter is an incredibly light and compact water filtration system for fast and light activities, where drinking from streams is an option but would have been too risky without a filter. The filter itself weights just 63g and screws onto the included soft flask. When empty the whole unit rolls up and will fit in a trouser or running vest pocket.

The Katadyn BeFree system uses Katadyn's EZ-Clean membrane which has a 0.1 micron hollow fiber filter which eliminates bacteria, protozoa, algae, spores and sediments. Though more suited to filtering clear water it still works well for cloudy water and is easy to clean in the field, which may be necessary if the water is cloudy. It gives a good output of around 2 litres per minute and is very easy to clean by simply shaking or swishing in water. No back flushing or tools are necessary.

As it is a Microfilter it does not remove all water borne viruses. For this you usually use a chemical additive to kill the viruses.
