The Big Agnes Zoom UL Insulated is Big Agnes' lightest insulated camping mat. The Zoom UL provides amazing comfort in a package that's light and compact enough to impress even the fastest and lightest Alpinist. Starting at just 425g with an R-Value warmth rating of 4.3 the Zoom UL is warm enough for 3 season camping and backpacking trips.

The mat is inflated using the provided upcycled pad inflation sack, this is easily operated/connected to the valve and fills the mat rapidly. It also doubles up as a lightweight stuff sack for the mat. The high volume valves with micro adjustments make for fast inflation/deflation and easy fine tuning to your preferred firmness.

The Zoom UL uses two layers of heat reflective film to reduce convective heat loss to the ground. Inside the mat is an anti microbial treatment to prevent mould build up if you are inflating the bag using your own breath.

This pad replaced my trusty original thermarest mat, moving me solidly into the 21st century! I’m a side sleeper and regularly move around so I went for the wide regular size, happily sacrificing a few grams for extra comfort. Whilst I could not fault the pad on comfort, pack size, weight, or insulation, the noise was a factor that I just can’t get used to. The foil insulation within appears to be the culprit - it’s like sleeping on a giant empty crisp packet, with loud rustling whenever you move. I even had complaints from someone in another tent several metres away. I’ve just returned from a 14 day bike touring trip and I’ve had to admit defeat - sadly , it means EBay for this pad and I begin my search again.

I used foam mats for many years and decided to treat myself to an inflatable. I initially bought a Thermarest but did not get on with it as it was a) too taperered and b) the transverse chambers made it easy to rolll off the edge. This rextangular style with 'I-beams' eliminates both issues and it is certainly very comfortable. Too early to assess its durability.
