Probes
The most essential avalanche safety accessories are a transceiver and a shovel. The next most important item is a probe. These are extendible metal sections (a bit like a flexi tent pole) which form a rigid probe, necessary for exact pin pointing of victims. These will save time in the final part of the search process. Also used when the victim is not equipped with a transceiver or to determine snow pack depth. All our probes use a secure locking system and come with a bag.
Do I really need a probe?
Yes. A probe will pinpoint the exact location and depth of the victim and possibly alert the victim that help is at hand. If you are really unlucky then you can dig past someone, missing them by inches. It is possible to rescue someone without one.
Then why do most people carry them?
They are very light and fairly inexpensive but very useful, so most people have them. Can also be used to determine snowpack depth for pack analysis or searching for a good snowcave site. Also essential in helping out the rescue effort of somone buried without a transceiver.
How long are they?
Typically 2 to 3 metres, some in coloured sections for easier measurement. The longer the better. Some probes can be stored inside the shovel handle to save space and keep your kit together
How much do they weigh?
About 200-300g.
