Shovels

A Transceiver is a useless rescue device without a shovel! Don’t be selfish and not carry one. They are light, pack down small and are relatively cheap.
In the Backcountry a shovel has many uses: Digging snow caves and test pits, shaping kickers and half pipes and they can add a layer of back protection to your rucksack. You can also use one to dig out your car.
Anyone who thinks they can dig with their hands or their board is talking rubbish. You need a shovel. We stock shovels ranging from £30 upwards.

Please read our article Effective Shovelling, it will make all the difference in a rescue situation.

Do I really need a shovel?
Yes. The whole point of transceivers is that they are a self help system. When you locate someone you must be able to dig them up quickly. Not wait for help to arrive.
Can I dig with my board/ski/hands instead?
No. Digging with anything else is a waste of time and since suffocation is the main enemy, time is of the essence.
Are metal or plastic bladed shovels better?
We think metal is best. It's performance in hard snow is better. The lightest shovel we sell (BCA Tour shovel) is metal.
Are a couple of shovels within the group enough?
No. A shovel, like a transceiver, should be considered individual and every member should carry one. Imagine if all the shovels were buried in the avalanche.
How much do they weigh?
Typically 500-800g for a good snow shovel
So I'll need a backpack?
Yes. You will find you get used to it very quickly and is in fact very handy
