Petzl Spatha

The Petzl Spatha has a blade that has been styled to be able to cut rope or cord easily and quickly. This is achieved by the blade being both smooth and serrated. The Spatha is a must for working at heights or mountaineering where ropes may need to be cut.

The blade pivots on the textured wheel that has a hole through the centre, large enough to clip a carabiner through or even a Petzl Caritool. In use the blade is opened by the notch in the blade or by turning the wheel while holding the handle, good if you're wearing gloves. Once open there is a locking mechanism preventing the blade from folding closed onto your fingers.

Petzl Spatha Features

  • Smooth/serrated combo blade
  • Hole for attachment with a Caritool tool holder or a carabiner
  • Two ways to open the blade
  • Mechanism for locking the blade
  • Stainless steel blade for durability

I used the older version of this knife for many years. Was forced to get the new one after dropping it in the sea. Nice kit. Sharp and with a good grip. It even has a small hole for some cord. So dropping this one should not happen so easily.

Not entirely convinced by this knife, it is handy in that it easily drops onto a karabiner but the rotating bezel for ease of opening doesn't work as easily as I expected from the advertisement - the knife is ok and does what it should - pick one up in the discount sale but don't pay full price.

Nice and light compared to previous version. Serrated edge very useful for cutting cord and rope. Use it for both climbing and paddling. Locking feature is very handy. Blade doesn't come razor sharp and takes a bit of work to sharpen, but once sharp holds an edge well.

I'm happy with this knife - the one-handed opening is easy, and it locks positively when fully open. The stainless blade is sharp and the knife feels good in the hand. It's very convenient to clip it to your harness too. In summary, an excellent mountaineering/climbing knife. And efficient service from facewest, thanks.

This updated version is excellent. Surprisingly light, and quite compact. The blade is 72mm long - not huge, but still big enough for picnic duties as well as tat cutting. Blades locks securely, being easy to release when you want but without happening by accident. The large notch in the blade means it's straightforward to open, and nowhere near as fiddly as a swiss army knife or opinel. The 'textured wheel' for opening with gloved hands is very effective. The hole is large enough to hang nicely on a standard krab without getting hung up, but there is also a neat little hole in the recess in the handle, which allows you to attach a loop of cord if you prefer to rack it that way, or maybe attach a neck lanyard. A bit pricey but still feels like good value, given the quality and how well thought out it is.
