The Rab Nimbus Jacket is a lightweight synthetic filled jacket that provides down style lofting with the wet weather insulating performance of a synthetic. This makes it perfect for keeping you warm in the UK's often cold and damp conditions.

The Pertex Quantum outer is lightweight, breathable, windproof and quick drying, it is DWR treated so it will easily shed snow and moisture. Cirrus insulation attempts to emulate down, but without the drawbacks when it gets wet or when it needs to be cleaned. Cirrus insulation is a synthetic insulation that unlike others has not been formed into a sheet. Instead it remains a loose water resistant down like fibre that expands to form a "cloud of warmth". It will deliver the same warmth for its weight as 600 Fill Power duck down. It's also very fast drying allowing Cirrus to get back up to its full insulation potential a lot faster than Hydrophobic down.

The hood is stretchy enough to be used under or over a helmet and it features a peak for assisting with protecting your vision in poor weather. The durable YKK Vislon front zip is backed with an insulated baffle for retaining your warmth and preventing any heat loss. The jacket can be stowed inside the left hand pocket as this doubles up as an integrated stuff sack. The hem drawcord and lycra cuffs help to seal the jacket and prevent unwanted spindrift gaining access.

I've had this jacket for several months now (the wet, wintery ones) & can honestly say it's the business. I've come from a strong background of down & feathers but having got wetted-out once too often in the murky drizzle of northern England (even with some decent, Goretex pro on my exterior), I thought a totally synthetic fill could be the answer to my problems.

True, it's not as lightweight as down, nor does it pack down anywhere near as small, but these are minor considerations given that I'll be wearing it most of the time.

On first try out, I was disappointed as I was on the cooler side of true warmth. But this is because I was comparing it weight-for-weight with down; which, to be fair, can typically be worn next to the skin. This Nimbus jacket, when coupled with a decent wool baselayer (Icebreakers are my personal choice) works brilliantly. No clumping or noticeable loss of insulation in damp weather, very decently warm, a droplet-shedding finish, with good arm length, a very practical hood, 2 decent-sized hand pockets & a sufficiently high-up inner Napoleon on the LHS (not clashing with the exterior hand pockets, that is).

The zips haven't snagged yet & I'd definitely buy another in future. Definitely recommended.

I bought this jacket for mountaineering - as a mid-layer underneath a hard-shell - and as a warm outer layer while belaying at the crag. I can't praise this jacket enough: it's super light and warm enough for a mild winter. Where I live it usually doesn't go below 5C and there were winter nights that I would feel comfortable with nothing but a long-sleeve shirt underneath the jacket.

I haven't tried it on in the mountain or in near-zero temperatures, but I'm fairly confident that it will do the trick, with maybe a t-shirt and a fleece underneath. The fabric seems to be super-sturdy notwithstanding the lightweight.I also admit that I picked it out for its design: it looks casual enough to be an around-town jacket and I've used it more than once outside at the crag.

I've worn this jacket as an extra layer over one winter season backcountry skiing and snowshoeing in Hokkaido. I also find myself wearing it around town and cycling to work quite a lot. On first appearance it seems quite thin but it provides good warmth for its weight and blocks wind well. Rab say Cirrus is equivalent to 600FP down and that seems about right. The DWR finish takes care of rain showers with ease. It's light and packs into its own pocket - just, though I tend not to bother.

I'm 5'11 and lanky with long arms, and the Medium is a good fit, plenty of length in arms and torso. It is just roomy enough to throw on over other jackets at rest stops etc. Pockets are a good size. The hood is elasticated but has no adjustment, so while it will go over or under a helmet if you are wearing it bare headed or with a beanie it is a bit roomy and will not turn with your head. This was not a big problem for me.

Overall, this is a very useful bit of kit, and the beauty of it is not having to worry about getting it wet.

I got this jacket as an extra layer for early and late season backcountry skiing and snowshoeing here in Hokkaido though I've mainly been wearing it walking and cycling round town since it arrived. We've had snow since late October so plenty of chance to test it in cold conditions. It's kept me warm in below freezing weather with a baselayer and midlayer, blocking biting winds nicely. Half an hour cycling in the rain just saw it beading off as you'd expect on a new jacket so the insulation didn't actually get wet and I can't comment on how it performs in that state.

Overall it's actually warmer than I expected, Rab say this Cirrus is equivalent to 600 fill power down and I have no reason to doubt that. It's light (though I think a bit heavier than the listed weight on the Facewest site?) and stuffs into a side pocket (just) though I don't usually bother. I'm 5'11 and lanky and the Medium fits me well, plenty of length on the arms and torso. There is room for layers underneath and I can also get it on (snugly) over outer layers at rest stops. The hood fits over my bulky ski helmet though is a little loose if wearing it bare headed or over a beanie - it doesn't move with my head when I turn it, but it's not a big problem. Pockets are a decent size and the elasticated cuffs are simple and faff-free.

I really like this jacket, it's warm, light and there's no need to worry about it getting wet. I'm not sure if it is warm enough for really cold midwinter days here but for everything else it is just the job. I think Rab have nailed it with this!
