The Black-Diamond Vapor is the new bench mark in lightweight climbing helmets, and Black Diamond haven't just taken everything they can out of a helmet, they've put a lot back in as well. The main feature is the weight, or lack of it. Pick up the Vapor and you realise how remarkable it is. And with massive ventilation ports to the rear the Vapor not only looks cool it is sure to keep you cool.
The outer is Polycarbonate shell while inside is EPS moulded foam, shock absorbing and strong. But to make a helmet this light and to maintain strength and protection Black Diamond have added a layer of Kevlar and Carbon. The Tuck-Away Suspension is easily adjusted via a ratcheted quick adjust strap, and allows for compact storage in packs and haul bags.
Black-Diamond Vapor Features

- Geometric, open-air design provides unparalleled airflow

Customer Reviews of Black Diamond Vapor
Bought this primarily for alpine ski touring, although will use it for climbing and mountaineering too. Weight is a critical factor for ski touring, and consequently many tourers shun the additional weight of a helmet in their packs. However it only takes a minor fall to connect your head with a rock so I figured a very lightweight helmet could be a good investment.Although more expensive and a little heavier than the Petzl Scirocco, the BD Vapor won me over due to its better looks.I am delighted with it - it feels feather light and fits like a dream. Super comfy fit on my (quite large) head with or without a hat underneath, and allows a hood to be pulled up over the top. Haven't worn it with goggles but works fine with sunglasses. The rear cinch strap is of a very simple, robust design, is super-easy to adjust, and just folds down into the helmet so that packing it is easy with other stuff (goggles in my case) packed inside it.I didn't take any falls to properly test the helmet's protection performance, but it's so light and comfortable that I barely noticed it whilst skiing, so I will definitely be taking it again on future trips.I didn't wear it for skinning uphill but it does have big vents towards the rear so it's probably cooler than many others. It's also way more comfortable and stable than my previous climbing helmet (Petzl Elios) - no more jaunty helmet angles in photos.Nothing bad to say about it. Recommended.
I purchased the Black Diamond Vapour to replace a comfortable but beaten up BD Tracer.I thought the Tracer was a fantastic helmet but I noticed straight away a vastly improved comfort and lightness with Black Diamond Vapour.
Whilst I wouldn't normally wear a helmet for cragging, just multi pitch, alpine and scottish stuff, with this helmet there are no reasons not to!
A little pricey and the slings do snag on the headlamp clips (these can be removed though) but super light, stable and very well ventilated. Outstanding!
I bought this principally for a ski mountaineering trip. Light weight was an important factor in the purchase and it certainly is very light. I bought the larger one so I could fit a hat under it. It is comfortable, easily adjustable and despite it's light weight is relatively robust. It would clearly be suitable for summer rock climbing- you'd hardly be aware you were wearing it. However for winter climbing the ventilation holes would probably make it noisy and fill with snow easily. The usual good build quality from Black Diamond. It sits lower on the head than other helmets I've had in the past. An excellent purchase, pricey but recommended.
