The Black Diamond Deploy 3 Shovel is a highly durable small shovel with a telescopic handle attachment system. The innovative shaft attachment adds strength and stiffness by using a specially moulded aluminium sleeve and curved trapezoidal shaft to give excellent digging efficiency and penetration into hard snow.
The curve of the Deploy's handle makes it ideal for shifting large blocks of snow when building a snow shelter or digging as part of a team. This is a great shovel for emergency and planned usage: light, efficient, comfortable and durable.

Customer Reviews of Black Diamond Deploy 3 Shovel
Used on a recent mountain rescue winter training weekend in Glencoe/Glen Nevis and was happy enough to buy one afterwards! You can actually detach the handle from the shovel blade if you want to but in most circumstance you keep them together and simply slide the handle out into the extended position. It was good for digging avalanche pits and clearing debris and is well made. My only criticism is that the nipples are hard/impossible to release with gloves on. It is designed so the nipple engages as you pull the shaft out without you having to do anything as long as you haven't locked it in the closed position with the second nipple (which you're almost guaranteed to have done to minimise pack size). Just be aware. Shaft is curved so no storage space for a probe. Otherwise great product.
Well designed. It worked well digging snowholes - easy to shift icy crust and volumes of more compacted slab.
Black Diamond Deploy 3 shovel is an ideal product for me and the upcoming Ski touring trip planned for this season.A super lightweight but sturdy unit with a retractable handle which is perfect for storage in my ski pack. Weight and size are important factors when you are touring so this shovel is exactly what I'm looking for.
Beautiful shovel design with the handle telescoping into the blade itself.Easily to deploy quickly at the press of one buttom the whole system extends, and also easy to restow. Relatively light without any compromise in robustness and comes in a fantastic bright colour.
Carried it on the outside of a pack for several days whilst on a mountain route (including some rock climbing) without any damage visible apart from a couple of superficial scratches.
Is a good size for shifting snow, big enough to make an impact and small enough I can lift it with the full shovel loaded.
Very pleased with my purchase - great product at a reasonable price.
I guess the only minus is that it is a bit heavier than some of the other options avaliable so if weight is highly critical it might be worth looking around at the other options.
A great shovel, it is not the lightest you can get so I have not awarded 5 stars. although it is very practical with the handle fitting inside the shovel for ease of storage and the shovel itself is rather rigid making it a great shovel. I have never used in an emergency situation but had plenty of use for one when making snow holes on a outdoor course and making jumps for skis.
Thankfully I've never had to use this shovel in an emergency - only snow pack analysis and building a kicker, but it's light-weight, compact design make it an ideal back-country shovel.
It takes up minimal space in your pack and the integrated design means there is no fumbling around with separate components since the shovel is out of you pack and deployed within seconds.
Great shovel - I like the way the handle folds down inside the shovel meaning one less thing to lose either on the mountain or in the garage !! I used it to clear some ice off a concrete balcony and was impressed that the paint didn't scratch. Overall... it does what it says it does!
Bought this as my first bit of avalanche saftey gear and it is great.
I have also used it to dig out cars on our road that have got stuck and it is durable and considering it's small size easy to shift snow with. I also got a black diamond pack that it fits very snugly into the outside pocket of which is a great feature but probably brand specific.
Had tried a mates plastic shovel but I would go with this unless you are really really weight obsessed for a long tour or something.
Having toured with the military many times I was sure going to get a metal shovel! No questions asked. This little beauty is the perfect mix of strength, weight, and compactness, and although it's the least important feature it's quite a groovy colour too.
The cross section of the shaft aids to gripping. As a previous reviewer mentioned it does seem to shift the white stuff quicker than the size of it's blade would make you believe, this may be due to the well sculpted handle and it's good use of ergonomics, it fit's the hand well and stops the onset of cramp. In short bravo BD you have triumphed again, this is as good as value gets.
It can be stashed in your off-piste pack as one piece, or if your shovel pocket is not quite big enough, then you can store the shaft and blade separately. Either way, the shovel deploys smoothly and quickly and the shape of the blade really does seem to shift snow particularly quickly.
It's not much heavier than the plastic shovels on the market and the extra weight is definitely well worth carrying. If you doubt it, then next time you come across avalanche debris have a poke about and see how hard it can set up. Then consider which type of shovel you would want in your pack if you are digging your mate(s) out with the clock ticking.
