The Thermarest NeoAir Xtherm Max is a maximum sized ultra light mat ideal for use in extreme conditions and for those who like their space.

The Neoair XTherm Max has an R-Value of 5.7, this is more than that of self inflating mats weighing four times as much. This means that in terms of warmth to weight ratio, nothing comes close. It features ThermaCapture technology which is a series of baffles made from a reflective fabric providing an almost complete barrier to radiative heat loss, making it suitable for four season use. This, combined with a Triangular Core Matrix construction, makes the mat ultra light without being bulky to pack away.

The outer fabrics are a soft textured to provide superb next to skin comfort and are now quieter leading to a better night's sleep. The textured fabric also provides greater slip resistanceso you and your sleeping bag are less likely to slip off the mattress in the night.

I've just received the Thermarest NeoAir XTherm and bonus Thermarest easy chair Ultimate 25 and after a quick inspection and try out can say they sure are a great couple of products. The air mattress with it's R value of 5.7, lightweight at 640grams and wide dimensions are a perfect add on bit of kit to get me through the tough winter on the ground. The build quality feels thin but should do a good job of insulating me. Money well spent!!!

An essential piece of hiking/wild camping kit. If you need a lightweight, all-season camping mat that is warm, comfortable and won't let you down, then there is little point looking further than the Thermarest NeoAir Xtherm Max. How many positive reviews do you need to read to be convinced :)

It might seem a lot of cash for something to lie on (and it is, frankly), but honestly it will make such a difference to your trips - especially in winter (but not exclusively - it's not like a bag that gets too warm in summer!). Your choice is either to procrastinate by buying a couple of disappointing £20-£40 self-inflating mats and spend a while camping uncomfortably getting cold kidneys until you eventually buy one of these; OR just suck it up and buy one of these now.

I'd also recommend the Thermarest NeoAir All-Season mat which is slightly cheaper (not quite as warm), and the compact battery inflation pump. You won't regret this purchase after the first morning waking up on it (you can even sleep on your side for once!).

There really are no downsides; it doesn't sound like a crisp packet, it inflates quickly, and it won't pop on rough ground (in fact it flattens out rough ground wonderfully well). Inflate the thing fully before letting a small amount of air out. As long as you don't lie too near a spitting fire, or enjoy smoking cigars in bed, then this mat will last you for years.

I've always been put off the neoair range having seen them in shops and given then a crinkly squeeze. They sound as if you would be sleeping inside a crisp packet!I've used a self inflating mat for years and been happy but I've recently been overhauling my gear and decided to go lighter.

Then came the searching. Weight vs r value vs cost vs comfort etc and I always came back to the xtherm. The main reason is (or how I justified the cost to myself is) in winter its the best on paper and in summer I can use a super light thin sleeping bag that are also cheaper and damn small. Then came the new xtherm max. Perfect as some of the story's that put me off were not enough shoulder room.

Well my experience so far with the xtherm max is its comfy its very warm its not half as crinkly as I thought its wide enough in standard fit I'm regular 5'10 and it inflates with little effort with the pump sack it comes with. I haven't used the free chair kit it came with from facewest yet as I usually carry my kit many miles before use.

The only real problem I have is its like sleeping on a balloon but I don't move much anyway

    Thanks facewest

I am planning to do some wild camping so reviewed my mattress options. I had originally considered a cheaper lighter model, but realised that this one would give me more versatility if temperatures drop (lying on this albeit in my front room, feels likely lying on a sun warmed warm pavement).

The Max version is a more traditional rectangle shape than the cocoon effect most are available as nowadays, this is much better if you are liable to move around a lot as you sleep. One criticism in some reviews I read are that it is 'crinkly' I have not observed this personally.

Mine came with one of the carry sacs you can use to help inflate it (I thought I might have to buy that extra so was pleasantly surprised).

Price was competitive, with quick shipping, and I was lucky enough to receive a free chair kit.

I now have 2 thermarests, the old one is much heavier, fatter, self inflating and have owned it for 20 years, that would still be my first choice for car camping, but this will get the nod when doing any significant hiking.

    5/5!
