Customer Reviews of Thermarest Compressible Pillow
At first this medium pillow looked very unimpressive but after a machine wash and tumble dry and keeping in the airing cupboard for 48 hrs it has plumped up. It is rather more bulky than my other pillows when compressed but pretty light for cycle touring and i can put up with the extra volume in my pannier for a good night sleep. That is something lacking from 3 previous pillows.
Negatives -You cant blow extra air into this pillow like a lot of travel pillows.
So far happy with the product.
Exactly what I was looking for. Some home comforts for a couple of nights camping during a diving trip to Lundy Island. Space is important as I have to pack everything in one bag and with the addition of a small compression bag the pillow can be packed into quite a tight space. When it arrived I thought it was bigger than expected - quite pleasantly surprised.
Comfortable once washed and dried as advised. Before that, it was lumpy and smelled of chemicals.
Pack size is fairly large and not particularly suited to the lightweight market Thermarest normal cater to.
Not overly impressed, but have only used it a few times so far and not on a long term trip.
The best pillow that I've ever taken trekking, fits neatly in the sleeping bag hood. I'm a side sleeper and using this I've never had a stiff neck in the morning & its loads more comfortable than inflatables coz it doesnt squash your ears. Not the most compressible pillow out there, but at just less than 200g for the small (which I have) its more than worth it for a decent nights kip.
I have tried loads of different pillows for camping and this is one of the better ones. It has got quite a lot of spring to it but as a side sleeper I just find it a bit too low still, I tried it as a top pillow with an inflatable pillow underneath and that helped as it is very comfortable but still not quite right. I'm thinking that I may have to take my pillows from home in future! Great pillow if you sleep on your back though, packs up small and is lightweight with the great build quality expected from Thermarest.
We are going on a week long cycling trip in the Summer so I needed something lightweight that packed up small and yet gave some support.I've had enough of using clothes as a pillow.I decided the medium size pillow was about right.Other reviews are quite right that the pillow looks very unimpressive when opened for the first time. It's thin and limp after being kept compressed for so long.I found putting it straight in the washing machine followed by the tumble drier (both on delicate cycles) soon had it nice and plump. The medium is just about big enough for me.
I have only used the pillow for one night so far. This was at home in bed.I slept well.I have only come up with two negative aspects. The first is your face gets warm lying on it, although not sweaty. This may actually be a positive thing when camping if it's cool at night. The second was that after a nights sleep, the pillow had compressed a bit.It soon plumped up again afterwards though.
I bought two of the medium sized ones and it seems to be a really good compromise between comfort and compressed size. I really like this pillow. When you first receive it, it doesn´t look like much, but that´s because they are stored compressed. Be patient and give it 48 hours and then it will get really fluffy.
As some other people already have written, it helps a lot to wash it and then tumble dry it. It makes a great difference both with the smell, and the loft. I could not find any washing instructions, but I went with synthetics 30 degrees, and then a tepid program in the dryer and that worked out great.
I really recommend it, it´s super comfy.
I purchased this pillow for backpack camping. I had used coats and clothes as a pillow before.I researched pillows and decided to go with the medium denim pillow.
The pillow arrived compressed so following the instructions I put it through a wash and dry cycle. This really made a difference to the loft of the pillow. This pillow is really comfortable, it does lose some of its loft throughout the night but this did not cause me any discomfort. My wife and children have all taken a shine to my pillow and I regularly find them using it to lay down and watch TV.
Lovely and soft material. When it arrived it was very compact and a good size for travelling. When I shook it out it grew rapidly and I was quite happy with the size... then I washed it to remove the 'new' smell and it grew even more!! Very very happy with it now! Best travel pillow I have ever found and I have tried quite a few over the years. Good buy.
This is probably the best camping pillow that I've used.I've had smaller and lighter pillows in the past, or just used clothes rolled up in a dry-bag, but nothings quite done the trick for me!This pillow is a good size and is very comfortable. It's bigger than most other camping pillows I've used and as a result it doesn't pack down too small, but the comfort makes up for the larger size. The only downside is that it smells a little 'chemically', but the smell seems to be reducing the more I use it, and a wash will probably sort it out!
I already own a small one of these and it is really great for cycle touring as it takes up no room at all in a pannier. For additional comfort I decided to order a medium for longer trips and car camping. These pillows really do pack down small and I much prefer them for comfort to the air pillows as they feel much more like a normal pillow. However, to get the pillow to loft fully, you really do have to wash it beforehand and then tumble dry. It's amazing the difference this makes! Once again, great customer service and speedy delivery from Facewest.
I have had a medium Thermarest compressible pillow for three years and I have been very impressed with comfort, durability and pack-size for camping. I purchased a second (size small) primarily for minimalist trekking, train journeys and long flights. Same great lofting and construction, and still plenty big to get comfortable when camping. Negatives: not cheap but well worth the money, highly recommended.
