Suunto Core All Black

The Suunto Core All Black is the most popular watch in the Core range, particularly popular with military personnel. It has a black plastic housing with a rotating aluminium bezel with degrees marked every 10°. The negative face and black elastomer strap give this watch the all black look that is so desirable by the military and other similar organisations.

The Core is Suunto's most popular altimeter watch. The combination of altimeter, barometer and compass (ABC) is a really useful tool for any navigator. Add to those features a number of timers, a memory function, storm alarm and depth meter and you have a complete outdoor adventures tool. The Suunto Core comes with many face and strap options but the functions of all the models are identical.

This watch is a replacement for an well used and abused Suunto Vector and all the various functions work well. It takes a bit of time getting used to the different buttons compared with the Suunto Vector but I like the extra functionality and easier logging capability. The only downside is the light on dark display is not always very clear, despite adjusting the contrast.

As my first time with a Suunto Core All Black I was skeptic, but after testing it I love the Sunto Core watch. It's so simple and comfortable. I definitely recommended this Suunto core All black watch. In the future I am planning to buy another different Suunto watch.

Nice looking watch. Easy to use and set up. Display generally is fine but not great in some conditions. Storm warning is utterly paranoid. Compass, the main reason I bought it is very good and seems pretty accurate, not sure I would use it on a hike but for a quick and dirty reference its excellent. If the display was brighter I would give it 5 stars, you can adjust the contrast but that's not the issue.

    Overall very happy.

I've been looking for a replacement for my Polar AXN500 for some time and after looking at what was available I settled on this Suunto Core. It is packed full of functions but still easy to operate, I haven't had to look at the instructions since I got it and find it very easy to find the function I need through the menu system. It is so lightweight and comfortable that you hardly feel you have it on. I am yet to find a bad point but it is early days, not that I'm looking for a fault, but considering what I paid for it I was expecting there to be some downsides, but can't find any yet. I would highly recommend this watch to anyone who needs a reasonably priced watch with these features, or even just as a day to day watch that's just a bit different.

Great looking watch, all functions are explained ok. You will need to go to web site for in depth as the setup card doesn't cover much and some function routes are not as shown. The storm warning and temp are a bit suspect as temp always measures your wrist / body and hpa mapping hastily shows storm but there hasn't been one. Instructions say for accurate temp watch shouldn't be worn??? How does that work then. Good job I don't need to rely on temp!, overall I give it a 7/10 I may change review after Lake District climbing next week :)

It's a good looking watch, quite large but feels remarkably light and generally seems well made and just nice to own. The display initially seems dark but the main display area has large digits and is perfectly readable over a fairly wide angle in reasonable light conditions; it's better than that on my previous watch, which was recessed deeply and tended to get shadowed. I also like the fact that the battery is user replaceable.

The menu system is generally reasonably logical, though I had to read the manual to learn how to set the compass declination and the mode selection (alti or baro) is referred to as "profile", which initially confused me. I do use the barometer function occasionally, more because I like to see what the weather's up to for interest's sake, rather than for any practical reason! I will probably use the altimeter function when skiing, again for geeky rather than practical reasons. The compass is a cool feature though I am unlikely to use it for anything serious.

From my point of view there are a couple of negatives though: the stopwatch only appears in a smaller secondary section of the display and my older eyes struggle to read it indoors. Also, I was rather dismayed to find that the stopwatch has no split / lap timers, and I had intended to use this watch for running. I chose it over Suunto's sports watches because the specifications showed a countdown timer, which wasn't listed on the sports ranges specifications, and I do use this feature quite a lot. One final minor point is that the countdown timer alarm only sounds for a few seconds and isn't very loud, so could get missed in a noisy environment.

All in all though I am pretty pleased with it.

I wear this watch every day. It's light and thin enough to wear for work and has useful day-to-functions such as the alarm, stopwatch and dual time (so that I can keep track of in the US). I also use it when I'm out walking and find the altimeter particularly useful when I'm descending in the mist and looking out for a turn off a path. The all-black design is stylish too. The only slight issue is that the display can be a bit hard to see at a glance in less than perfect light, but this can be remedied my adjusting the angle of your wrist and focusing for a second. The battery is easy to change too, which I've done a couple of times over the last three years. I've also had to replace the strap once, but did so easily with advice from Facewest, buying the black core standard elastomer strap which I've reviewed separately. This is half the price of buying a direct replacement.

Really great watch, particularly like the weather storm alarm which I find super useful to monitor the pressure when out and about.

Ideal also as another level of navigation info with the altimeter to cross reference with contour lines on the map.

Only gripe is the brightness of the display but guess that saves battery life which I'd prefer... Just have to read carefully in bright sunlight/underwater!

    Highly recommended!

Superb watch, very, very pleased with it. I bought the Vector as well from Facewest so I could compare the watches. My advice is go for the core if you can stretch the budget a bit. There are remarks about display being dim. I've no problem at all with it. It's not a bright display, but I think it is cleverly done. eg wore it in full sunshine and was able to read it clearly with polaroids on. The backlight is sufficient for nightime use and I'm sure the battery would run out very quickly if the display was brighter. Battery life according to manual 1 year. Battery is a coin type, easy to change yourself. I took the time to digest the online manual

Worth getting familiar with all the functions straight away. Alto very accurate when checked against etrex10 reading at summit (Ben Nevis) Baro graph and trend very clear. Compass easy to use, my favourite option was setting bearing where watch tells you turn left or right until a →← symbol lets you know you're on target. I am very pleased with the watch and would recommend. I went for the all black option. Last note is about the superb customer service from Will at FaceWest. I returned the Vector, as I was keeping the Core, and managed to send back an empty Core box by mistake. Will was great about it all and sent the empty box back in a later order while I returned the Vector for a credit which was quickly paid into my account. Thanks Will/FaceWest

I already own a Suunto XLander military watch. The only downside to the XLander is it can be a bit complicated to use all the features. The Core All Black is easier to use and has a really useful storm warning feature. Another bonus of the Core is that the screen lock is better and prevents changing between modes. Personally I hold the opinion that the layout and operability of the Core All black is better. It is a robust, reliable watch that is packed with easy to use features.
