The Rab Paradox Pull On is a lightweight pull on that works well as either a mid or, in warmer temperatures, an outer layer. Designed to be worn much like a fleece but with the added benefits of a super stretch outer with a high level of wind resistance.
The combination of hi-gauge polyester fabrics, as a mesh lining and knit outer, ensures moisture can be moved away from the body quickly through the insulating Alpha layer. Polartec Alpha is a very lightweight insulation that is made from a light woven fleece making it highly breathable and quick drying.
The neck zip is deep venting so it will allow extra air flow when your working hard. The hem features a half drawcord and the cuffs are elasticated for when you need to keep the warmth trapped in. With a slim fit it allows outer layers to easily slide over.
This is a great piece of kit under the right circumstances. The sleeves are long reaching my knuckles. They are elasticated but not tightly and there is no way to cinch them in even tighter. This is not really a problem but it is worth noting. On a recent walk at about 7-8C I completed the first half wearing my Rab Vapour rise jacket and the second half wearing the paradox. At no time did I wear anything underneath them. I found the Paradox to be warmer probably because of its closer fit, but it was a little less windproof, or at least that's how it felt to me. Neither are particularly wind resistant and I can only wear either in calm conditions or with a light breeze. The Paradox is very comfortable worn next to the skin. I'd rate it's warmth equivalent to that of a mid weight fleece. So it's good, good enough that I now own 2!
I've used this top for hillwalking and backpacking.I've worn it in mild weather, cool weather, strong wind, rain and I've slept in it to boost my sleeping bag.
I really like it.It's comfy to wear, layers reasonably well under coats and wind shirts, warm, quite hard wearing and very breathable.I'm just not sure what advantage it has over a normal 100 gauge fleece. It's heavier than a 100 gauge fleece, more expensive and I'm not sure it's significantly warmer or more breathable.
I guess that's why it's called paradox - it's my favourite top even though it has no obvious advantage over a cheap polyester fleece so I've only given it 4 out of five.
