Description
The Petzl TacTikka is the military/camo version of Petzl's Classic TacTikka headtorch which, thanks to frequent updates to both the outer casing and internal functionality still makes a great versatile headtorch today. This latest version features Petzl's new Hybrid technology making the TacTikka compatible to use with both standard AAA batteries and the rechargeable Petzl Core battery.
Giving 300 lumens and a wide uniform beam the TacTikka is suitable for proximity lighting and movement on easy ground and with the black or camo colour options is ideal for hunting and fishing. It has 3 white light modes plus a red light, all of which are accessed using the single button operation. The lamp itself is lightweight and compact making it unobtrusive when worn or packed away.

Using good quality AAA batteries gives the burn times as shown below. This torch is compatible with Petzl's Core battery (sold separately) which gives a very different performance.

I got this because I wanted the option of a red light on a decent lightweight head torch. The red light (actually it's slightly pink in colour when the batteries are new) is adequate for most tinkering in the dark and doesn't fry my night vision. Up until now I've stuck a bit of red film over my head lamp but it's a fiddle to peel it off if I want to have full white light. The red filter on the TacTikka flips over the lens when required or up out of the way when not. It is of excellent design the filter mechanism feels solid and positive in action. When not in use the red filter is flush against the housing of the head torch so it doesn't catch on anything. This might be the only problem for some to flip the red filter out of the way can be a bit fiddly as the tag that you need to get hold of is very flush. At worst for me it means taking my glove off so I can feel where the tag is – not a problem. The rest of the torch is like the standard Tikka really. It's got a comfy head strap but is also compact and lightweight. Haven't tried it in the rain so can't comment on how well sealed it is but I've never had a problem with Petzl head torches in this respect.
