The Petzl Fig 8 is also known as the Huit. It has been designed for use with either single or double ropes. The square shaping reduces twisting of the rope and avoids the rope forming a girth hitch or larks head over the figure 8.
It is possible to use the small oval hole as a belay plate or for descent on thinner ropes. This is a very traditional item and ideal for climbing in the high mountains.
