The Petzl Meteor 4 helmet is as the name suggests the fourth version of this superb lightweight climbing and mountaineering helmet. The large ventilation openings allow cooling air to circulate when climbing in warmer weather, though in the cold it's always good to have a lid liner beanie to keep you warm.
The Meteor 4 is a very comfortable and stable helmet, this is achieved via the adjustable cradle that will form to your head shape. The helmet has a full polystyrene foam lining that is finished with a soft wicking headband. The chin strap is fastened with a magnetic buckle, allowing for it to be done with one hand or even with bulky gloves.
The Meteor 4 is compatible with the Petzl Vizion face shield. This can easily be attached to the helmet providing extra protection from shattered ice and spindrift.
If you're intending to use a helmet where you may encounter frequent minor rock falls and generally more knocks, then we would recommend a helmet with a polycarbonate shell.

Kenny Grant, Aspirant British Mountain Guide, reviews the Petzl Meteor 4 Climbing Helmet.
"Between guiding and my own personal climbing I wear a helmet many days of the year and as well as safety, place a high value on a helmet's comfort and weight.
The Meteor 4 scores very well in both of these categories for me. Having a fairly large head circumference I struggled with previous versions of the Meteor, finding it tricky to fit a hat underneath for cold climbing. However the shape of the 4 seems to have been tweaked and I find the size 2 is now perfect with or without a hat. The redesign also makes the helmet feel sleeker and lower profile and the new larger vent keep me cooler on boiling hot Alpine days.
As with any foam helmet it is not going to be as strong or durable as a hard shell polycarbonate (be careful when packing the Meteor in your rucksack) but for me it is worth the compromise for the high levels of comfort and very light weight at 220g, giving the feeling you aren't wearing a helmet.
I've certainly found that I've been inclined to wear my Meteor 4 more than any previous helmets I've used."
Customer Reviews of Petzl Meteor
Awesome light weight and well vented helmet for ski touring/ski mountaineering. Plenty comfortable enough for skinning/boot packing up and reassuring both up and down.
A MIPS variant, like the Mammut Wall Rider, is the only feature I think is slightly lacking.
