The Mammut Pro Protection 35 a large volume and highly featured pack in the Mammut Protection range of avalanche airbags. Aimed at mountain professionals like Guides and instructors, but also ideal for those on 'big kit' missions. The Pro Protection 35 has a zipped back opening so you can access all your gear even with a board or skis on the front.
The Pro Protection has plenty of room for multi day tours or someone carrying the bulk of group gear. Plenty of compartments and exterior attachment options help you keep things organised including a separate front pocket for avalanche safety gear. Thermoformed back padding keeps even heavy loads comfortable and the back length is adjustable to 3 different sizes.
The 3.0 Protection Airbag differs from the Removable Airbag in that it offers much more protection as when inflated it expands around the side of your head and over your shoulders. It does cost and weight a little more than the Removable Airbag. Both the Protection and Removable airbag types can be removed from the pack. For information on how avalanche airbags work in general and the differences between the brands, please read Avalanche Airbag Information.
Travelling with compressed gas is restricted. As airbags become more common the airlines with ski routes are getting more used to dealing with them. Please read our Guide to Flying with Airbags and Refilling them.

I bought the pack because of the universality and flexibility of the Mammut system.
I hate skiing with a pack but under light loads - skins, couteaux, drinks and food, you don't notice it. Even with full ski touring kit, it still sits well on your back and doesn't swing or unbalance you downhill. Uphill I sweat a lot but haven't had a sweaty back uphill with this pack.
The packing system is excellent. Skins and couteaux can fit in the 'safety pocket' along with probe and shovel. Goggle pocket holds loads of kit. The main compartment is big enough for a multi day tour.
The instructions aren't great. Youtube videos on Mammut channel are very helpful. It's well worth buying the extra cartridge not just to test the pack but to get you used to repacking the airbag. This needs an extra air of hands or a lot of swearing. The routing of the deployment cable is marked in the pack but it would be easy to make an error.
Excellent product. The best airbag system out there due to the protection system of the airbag and the head on top technology. No messing around with triggers with explosives or worrying about batteries staying charged in the cold. The 35L has plenty of room for all the stuff you need for a days touring and enough pockets to keep it all organised. Good range of attachments for skis, board, ice axe, helmet once you figure out how they work as this is not well described in the manual.
