The Black Diamond Half Dome Helmet 2 is a completely new helmet. It has been designed to provide the best possible protection from chossy friable limestone right through to technical alpine climbing. These helmets have been built to be durable and perform in the worst of conditions.
The Half Dome has a new head shape inside and outside which contributes to the perfect fit. Inside, moulded EPS foam will protect your head from impacts while the suspension system cradles your head. The fit is further fine tuned with the custom wheel adjuster. The wheel adjuster and suspension system tucks away into the helmet for compact storage, especially handy when pack size is limited.
The outer ABS plastic shell is extremely durable and will take knock after knock. The shell has 4 headlamp clips which will secure the strap and will not let you down. The Half Dome has exceptional ventilation that allows air to pass through and expel moisture, contributing to the most comfortable helmet form Black Diamond to date.

Dave from Climbing Gear Reviews takes another look at his favourite climbing helmet: the Black Diamond Half Dome.
"Our durable, comfortable and supremely adjustable workhorse, the Half Dome is built for the relentless pursuit of all styles of climbing."
I looked at the re-vamped Black Diamond Half Dome climbing helmet back in June 2013 and concluded that it was a great value, all round climbing helmet that was suitable for all types of climbing. My view hasn't changed and the 2015 version is still a five star helmet that has really stood the test of time.
The fit is excellent with or without a hat on and the profile is low enough so that a hood easily goes over it. The cradle adjuster dial is nice and big and easy to use with gloves on and the cradle is super easy to adjust.
I constantly wear a climbing helmet when working and often for all other recreational climbing except valley sport climbing. For work I exclusively wear the Black Diamond Half Dome because it's so comfortable. I've worn it in all weathers including some hot days in Riglos recently and it hasn't let me down.Well ventilated for fast moving winter ascents..
The advantages of using a rigid ABS helmet against a more lightweight helmet is durability, this has meant that although the Half Dome gets a lot of wear and abuse I haven't had to buy a new one. With polystyrene ones I would have to replace it every year as my helmets get banged about a bit when I'm teaching climbing and generally leading climbing activities.Comfortable for a long day out: Fiesta de los Biceps, Riglos.
Overall rating: ★★★★★
So, two years later and I'm still recommending it. For the price it's a great helmet and it will last you many seasons. Of course, it's not the lightest helmet in the Black Diamond range but is probably the most versatile. A five star helmet!

I've had a previous half Dome and got this one as the sizing suited me better. Comfortable & easily adjustable. Even with gloves. Weight not bad at all for a fully protective lid. Chin strap could be a little slicker? All in an excellent all rounder. Highly recommended.
This is the second climbing helmet I have used and fortunately up to now I can only comment on how comfortable and adjustable this helmet is and not how it handles impacts. The helmet is not the most light weight out there but despite the weight it does manage to disappear when wearing it. Every adjustment is very easy to perform even with gloves on and the dial adjusting the size has a very good feel and good size steps. I bought the blueish one and it looks quite nice (I expected it a bit more vibrant) and apart from the color the shape does look good in my head. The headlamp attachment points look secure but the headlamp strap does block the ventilation holes in the rear of the helmet. This is a very solid helmet proposal in a very competitive price but I doubt this is the last helmet I buy.
I bought this for general climbing, and debated whether to use it for ski mountaineering. My guide said a climbing helmet was a better option for this type of route, and I know it isn't a skiing helmet, and I realise the limitations. However I was more concerned about falling down a slope going up and banging my head, and about rock/ice falls. In the event I didn't take it - just a weight save, and at no stage did I feel I needed a helmet. No-one on we saw wore one. However I have used the helmet for some climbing and steeper scrambling and really like it, especially as it is tough, light and stops you getting brained on a rock if you are not looking properly.
Bought this helmet as a bit of a 'jack of all trades'. I scramble mainly with moderate Winter routes and Alpine PD as seasonal extras. I needed a strong lightweight, durable shell helmet that was easy to adjust. The Half Dome is all of these. Well vented and with no niggly hooks to catch stray cords/straps in the rucksack. The adjuster ratchet dial is very quick and precise and can be operated fully gloved. Although not the lightest helmet in the world (that award has gone to some monstrous blancmange offering from Petzl), the Half Dome is no pudding basin and is good for long days out. It holds a headtorch well and has the reassuring feel of a protective piece of kit. Careful if you want to have a thick wooly beanie underneath, it may struggle to encompass head, hair and hat. I managed fine with a thin polyester head-over.Overall I am very happy with my purchase. It performed very well on the Haute Route this Summer. Nice choice of colours as well if that is important.
This helmet is sturdy and extremely lightweight. It has enough vents to keep your head cool without a draft coming through. The colours are great as you can be spotted but they are not too outlandish. The material is quality and the shape fits my head very well but can be adjusted if need be but mine doesn't. It is definitely an investment but I guess you get what you pay for. Facewest was the cheapest deal when I was shopping around for price and always deliver a super fast delivery so I would highly recommend ordering from Facewest too.
My half dome has done well repelling pebbles and saving my head from bumping under roofs ... but I have always had a hard time fitting it. I picked this piece of equipment because I trust BD and like its features, including the suspension system.
It adjusts by Velcro in the back, unlike the Petzl crank systems that can catch on hair. I still find this very easy to use, but the helmet is often riding kinda far back on my head. Tightening it to keep it in perfect position results in unpleasant friction between the buckle and my chin.
