Arcteryx Cierzo 18

Arcteryx Cierzo 18

The Arcteryx Cierzo 18 is a superlight 18 litre pack that's perfect for rock and alpine routes. Perhaps the most important feature of the Cierzo 18 is its ability to pack down into a tiny package, which is easy to stash inside your main pack when walking in to routes. It can then be unpacked and used to carry clothing, food and a pair of trainers for the descent, before stowing it away again for the walk out.

Made from a combination of high tenacity nylon fabrics the pack is super lightweight, yet still very durable. The shoulder straps are padded for carry comfort and there's an adjustable sternum strap and waist belt. The main opening is glove friendly, with a pull to open and close draw system. The adjustable top strap can be used as a compression strap or for securing your rope and the SwiftCord drawstring compression system with dual quick hooks, enables various external carry options. It has an adjustable toggle system to allow ice tools to be carried on the pack. The pack also benefits from being bladder compatible with a HydroPort providing the drinking tube with an easy exit to the outside of the pack.

I've got the slightly larger version of this pack with very similar features. It is a very simple lightweight product but is fairly costly for what you get. There are other packs on the market of similar weight and size which importantly have added functionality (taped seams for instance which this pack does not have). I would say the USP is its ability to roll up into its own pocket for ease of carrying. If that is critical for you then it is a good product. If you're quite happy pushing your empty pack flat into your larger luggage/pack then there are better alternatives. To my logic at least you need a fully sealed pack if you want ultra light weight as otherwise you're going to need a liner dry bag to keep your kit dry. Again if you use this purely for lead climbing then it might not matter so much but I was left slightly disappointed.

Great Rucksack and very light, just what I was looking for. However, it did take me some time to work out how to pack it into its front pocket. I didn't realise it would be inside out. This is merely a cosmetic observation and overall the quality, weight and functionality of the rucksack is perfect for my needs.
