Product Description:

The Mountain Equipment Morpheus Jacket uses the Gore-Tex® Pro Shell technology to great effect to create an uncluttered functional jacket for mountaineers and hill walkers. With its 3-layer Pro Shell construction the Morpheus is an excellent go-to shell for all outdoor applications.

The cut is somewhere between the short body full-on climbers' cut of the Changabang and the longer full protection cut of the Kongur and Ogre. The cut plus the low weight of 445g is what makes the Morpheus such a great all round choice.

Mountain Equipment Morpheus Jacket Features:

  • 3-layer-Gore-Tex® Pro Shell Ascendor fabric.

I have used mine for over 50 days now, so feel qualified to post a review. This Jacket has all the features you need, and none you don't. The result is a light but high perfomance jacket. I have used mine for Ski Touring, Backcountry skiing , Paraglding and walking. It is very waterproof and breathes well (It's Gore Pro Shell). It has a great fit (It is not cut too short) and build quality is superb. The storm flap and all the zips/ cuffs work fine. Pockets fit a map easily. You can get lighter jackets, but if you want a durable perfomance jacket then I don't think you will find a better one.

Used for 12 month in the Alps and the Pyreneans during winter, spring and summer. A pure, no fuss mountaineering hardshell jacket. Good fit, very protective and breathable. The 3 layer Gore-Tex Pro shell fabric is though enough to survive intensive mountain abuse while keeping all of its qualities. A special mention to the 'helmet friendly" hood and the large chest pocket. In a word, my favorite hardshell jacket ever.

I used this jacket on a hike of the Appalachian trail in 2009. I have mixed emotions looking back at how this jacket performed. In very cold weather it was great, as i was not sweating underneath. However, later in the year when it was warmer, I found the jacket to be utterly useless when conducting any type of exertion and I chose not to wear it, reasoning that I was definitely going to be wet and I would rather it was rain than sweat.
Another problem I found was the fit of the jacket. I found that when wearing a pack the jacket often rode up under, and then above the hip-belt of my pack. This meant water was then just runing straight down the back of my legs, although this could be because I am quite tall, it was irritating nonetheless! (Facewest comment: The ME Ogre and ME Kongur are longer fitting jackets).

This is the second ME Morpheus Jacket that I've owned, the first was faulty and replaced FOC by ME (after 18 mths abuse!!). It was purchased to replace my old MOD gore tex jacket, when out in the mountains, or simply out with the family on wet, windy days.
The cut of the jacket is about right, especially when carrying a bergen, the hood is the best available, there are enough pockets for maps, GPS, gloves etc and the build quality is fantastic. Waterproofess from new was excellent and found that XCR offered excellent windproofness.
My jacket is now years old and has seen good service, I've always kept it clean and reproofed when required. Two slight problems that I've noticed:-
1) I often feel wet underneath, despite wearing breathable base layers and lightweight fleeces. Jacket has not leaked in rain.
2) From new the water repellency was brilliant and over time this has stopped. I've washed and treated the jacket as per ME instructions, but this does not last long.
Overall, I am very happy with this jacket and may just need to replace before this winter is through.

Purchased this jacket mainly for day hikes in Ireland (rain rain rain)
The first thing to note about this jacket is the size. It packs very light and feels v light when on.
My last rain jacket had a poor hood, and I must say the metal spine in the Morpheus hood is an excellent feature. It keeps the hood firmly on your head in wind and rain (this was a major complaint with my last rain jacket!)
Plenty of room in the side pockets, the external pocket will hold your map and compass but not much more.
