Zippo Emergency Fire Starter Kit Review
Reviewer: Neil Smith, Preston (30-11-2011)
Yes, it’s cheating and if that’s a problem then stick to your trusty fire steel! For me, this is a great little luxury which just means making camp at the end of the day is a little less of a chore. I received this as a present and it’s basically a waterproof flint-wheel with these neat little wax-coated tinder-sticks inside. They light really easily and are a great starting point for your fire. There’s only room for four inside the case but I’ve never needed more than one. The top doesn’t actually lock shut, it only flips shut like a traditional Zippo, but it does seem perfectly adequate and keeps the contents dry - although I haven’t dropped it in a river or anything like that yet.
I was surprised there was no lanyard, this kind of thing is easy to lose when you’re working in the dark but it does have a good bright orange case to help with that. One thing which was a pleasant surprise was that the tinder-sticks are not particularly expensive so I don’t end up using it for emergencies only.
