Thermarest ToughSkin

The Thermarest Toughskin is a hybrid self inflating mat and closed cell foam matress. At the heart of the tough skin is Thermarest's standard self inflating foam that gives excellent comfort and insulation at very low weight but underneath this is a layer of closed cell foam (see upper corner of image).
The closed cell foam adds puncture protection to your mat because it would have to be a very long thorn to get through the foam and hole the airtight part of the mat. Even if that were to happen you would still be sleeping on the closed cell foam like a regular simple roll mat rather than some cordura and very thin foam if you puncture a standard Thermarest.
The closed cell foam is also a great insulator and very comfortable, making the Toughskin mats great for thorny environments, winter camping and expeditions.
The extra closed cell foam does make the Toughskin mats 2-300g heavier than the Trail Pro (also from the Trek & Travel series) but the Toughskin is still light and compact enough to backpack with, the Toughskin is also a great car camping and winter mat.
