The Thermarest Ridge Rest SOLite is the latest version of the popular RidgeRest. Thermarest have added a thin layer of aluminium to the surface of the mat to provide a 10% boost in warmth and improved durability.
The RidgeRest offers a lightweight and comfortable place to sleep, though it is a little bulkier than an inflatable Thermarest. The real advantage of the Ridgerest is the indestructibility of closed cell foam. These mats are preferred by people who will sleep in environments that will easily puncture an inflating mat.

I bought the ridgerest several months ago, mainly due to the great reviews and competitive price. I have used it several times now. I could not believe how warm and comfortable this pad was the first time using it in the wild. OK, so it is abit bulky when carrying but I strap to my pack an forget about it due to its light weight an indestructible construction. On colder trips I pair it with an trail scout, what comfort and heat! I have already recommended this product to friends.
Very light and rather cosy feeling due to softer material than the classic style foam mat, and the corrugated construction. I've found it comfier than a simple cheap closed cell matt and not much less comfy than a thin (25mm) self inflating Thermarest. Has proved durable in daily use on fairly rough places on bike tours, and reassuring on trips where I was concerned with puncturing the much more compact (and expensive) self inflating one. Can pack down to around 17cm diameter if done very tightly but still a little bulkier than the usual closed cell foam (which is also why it's warmer and slightly more comfy!). You could get it down to about 14cm diameter if size mattered and you were willing to cut it down to 3/4 length but size hasn't actually been enough of an annoyance to do this yet. I believe it's meant to be silver side up but no difference I can detect .... other than that side is annoyingly squeaky!
I bought this as a lighter and more durable alternative to my self inflating mat. It is not as warm and comfortable but that is to be expected.
I have so far slept on it in 1 degree weather with a sleeping bag with a comfort rating of -3 degrees and wasn't cold at all so I expect it will perform acceptably well in lower temperatures as well. It is a bit hard but not uncomfortable - the hardness didn't bother me at all but it may for some people.
Something that may initially seem to be a downside for this mat over a self inflating mat is size. However, my self inflating mat always goes inside my rucksack. I would not have it on the outside for risk of it being punctured and damaged. The RidgeRest, as it is not at any great risk of being damaged can go on the outside, freeing up space inside my rucksack. So practically speaking, it can be see as being both lighter and taking up less space.
Durability is a major factor in the equipment I choose and I will not be afraid to lay this on the ground anywhere when I want to sit down, or to have it around sparks and fires, or to use sharp tools while on it. The silver coating may wear away but that's not the end of the world.
Seeing as I don't see comfort as a major factor in choosing equipment, I would say the only reason you would need to think about self inflating mats over this one is if you are going somewhere very cold warmth is a big concern. Even then it can be a good idea to have a closed cell mat underneath the self inflating one for added warmth and as a back-up should the self inflating mat fail.
Bought this item to use to supplement my air mattress for use in winter camps and also to use when car-camping. Due to it's size, I wouldn't recommend it if you are backpacking, other than in winter. Otherwise its an excellent map, very well made, very comfortable and good value for a thermarest product. Pleased with the purchase.
I bought the Thermarest RidgeRest SOLite some ten months ago. Since receiving the SOLite mat it has seen usage during overnights in various climate and on various ground.
I have been nothing but pleased with the SOLite mat. The biggest drawback compared to inflatable mats, the size, have not been an issue at all. The SOLite is just that, so light. Strapped to my backpack it will not cause the pack to sag or make the load uneven. It works splendid as a seating pad attached to the backpack during short breaks.
I do not consider the SOLite bulky in any way, rolled up tight with proper straps. Its a comfort knowing just how hard you can roll it up without a worry of damaging the mat.
Temperature hasn't been an issue for me, the mat keeps me warm!
I have found the Thermarest Ridge rest ideal for winter wild camping where you want warmth put don't want the risk of puncturing your insulation with a crampon or ice axe.
The mat is similar to the 'old school' closed cell foam mats that I used to get at the local surplus store but the ridges to make it a much more comfortable night!
I'm not sure on the effectiveness of the silver reflective material on added warmth but from the thermarest website the ridge and reflection idea seems sound.
The final great thing about this mat was the price! Using face west reward points from other orders makes this a very acceptable purchase, would buy again if I ever destroy this one!
