Thermarest Prolite

The Thermarest Prolite is a lightweight self inflating mattress that is suitable for 2-3 season use and ideal for lightweight backpacking. One of the key attributes of the Prolite is it's small packed size that has resulted in this mat being the choice for camping in all but the coldest months.

The Atmos urethane foam has holes cut into it to lower the overall density and weight of the Prolite. In this latest version of the mat theses are cut at an angle. This has the effect of decreasing the air flow between the ground and the top of the mattress but still keeping the weight to a minimum along with excellent ability to be compressed. The outer 50 denier Polyester fabrics are tough and durable with the addition of Rip-stop on the upper side.

Thermarest mat is brilliant. Providing loads of comfort considering the size. Light weight and pack size are fantastic. I used a full size, thicker, less expensive mat before and I don't notice any difference in comfort. Same comfort, smaller and lighter. And you get a handy wee chair. Winner all round.

Product arrived in good time on standard delivery.

It's exactly what I thought I was getting, a light, self inflating, hard wearing mat. Not the most comfortable thing I've slept on but for the comfort/weight/size trade-off it's amazing.

I went for the smallest size as was getting it for a MM. I was a bit concerned that legs would be hanging off it but these were unfounded.

Light, packs away well, got a good nights sleep equals five stars from me. Can't comment on durability yet but seems fine so far.

Advantages: Reasonably light for backpacking. Robust outer layer. Reliable thermarest technology. About half the price of the very lightest mattresses.

Disadvantages: More aggressive tapering leaves little space to lay arms at side whilst of your back. Suppplied in a black bag easily lost in tent- matching poppy bag would have been better.

Overall a good mat for backpacking

I bought this Thermarest having been converted away from 30+ years of foam roll mat usage after seeing my wife use a Thermarest to get a better night's sleep! The original ones were large when packed and pretty heavy, which was of little use to me for mountain marathons (MM) where weight and pack-down size are all-important. I was surprised at just how light and small this Thermarest Prolite was though. I bought the X-Small and while effective, it doesn't quite fit my 6' frame in width (shoulders span over the sides) or length (calves and feet off the bottom)! For the space and weight saved, however, this is a sacrifice I am prepared to make for MMs. Pros: Light; small packed size; complete with own stuff sack; will fit into a rucksack pocket easily giving more space in the main sack if necessary; 3-season rating warm enough for most UK year-round use. More portable packed size than a conventional roll matt. Cons: Choose your size and warmth rating carefully according to your intended use because for general use for larger men the X-Small Prolite may not be big or warm enough. Pricey compared with a roll matt. Am now a Thermarest convert. 'Nuff said!

I've bought this mat in regular size to save about half a kilo over my old self-inflating one. The size is about the same, just a little bit shorter and a little bit narrower, but for someone like me, who turns and tosses a lot during the night those few centimeters difference in width are noticeable. I've chosen this over the NeoAir XLite, because it's very common for me to camp in places with no flat surface, and I was curious about the non-slip surface of the mat. So far it proved to work well, I haven't found myself kicking the side of the tent when sleeping on an incline. Other than that, minimizing the noise during the night (from what I've read, the XLite can be noisy if you turn around a lot) and price were also taken into consideration. I store the mat inflated, but it doesn't really self-inflate (at least not in the first few minutes), but that's not really an issue for me, I'm used to inflate my mats by blowing. This mat packs down incredibly small, but the packing procedure can be a little bit tricky to get right at the beginning. Hint: check the video on their site!

I have now used the Regular sized for 6 nights (about +10C weather) and so far don't have much negative to say. It is lightweight, packs easily in a small space and is comfortable. It came with a stuff sack, so it easy to carry. Also the softness is easy to adjust by letting air out.

The only thing that worries me is the durability, but I believe that the mat is quite easy to repair in case of puncture, but it might be good to carry also repair patches when trekking. Previously I have used only traditional Foam mats, but the Prolite is much more comfortable and easier to carry, so there is no going back.
