The Sweet Trooper Helmet, formally the Trooper Half Cut, is a low weight and low volume carbon fibre and ABS plastic snowsports helmet providing exceptional levels of protection, and is available in two sizes.

The Trooper is incredibly comfortable, has great ventilation and an advanced carbon fibre shell ensuring fantastic protection (for details of the Trooper construction see below). The Trooper has a larger carbon fibre ABS shell than the Rooster, this adds some extra volume while still maintaining the same weight.

The Trooper comes with a set of fit pads which allow you to customize the inside of your helmet for the best fit and optimum protection. Removable earpads make the helmet cooler to wear in spring or they can be replaced with the Sweet Soundpads (see related products below) allowing you to listen to music as you ski or board.

Sweet Helmet Construction

1: Carbon fibre reinforced composite shell
All SWEET helmets are constructed from continuous carbon fibre reinforced thermosetting resin composites. They’re produced by arranging the carefully selected fibre-resin mixture into the desired shape. The configuration and direction of the fibres are optimized to provide maximum performance before they are cured inside a matching mould. The curing process in the mould is accomplished by exposing the material to elevated temperatures and pressures. The applied pressure provides the force needed to squeeze excess resin out of the material, to consolidate individual plies, and to compress any voids. The technology involved is hard core, and often used in the aerospace and car racing industry, where performance of the material is crucial.

Carbon fibre reinforced composite key features:
- Light weight
- Extreme strength to weight ratio
- Extreme stiffness / rigidity
- Corrosion resistant
- Fatigue and crash resistant
- Impact absorbent
- Temperature resistant

The carbon fibre reinforced composite shell is vital in distributing the forces, and makes sure that the padding will largely deform from the inside, rather than from both sides which would be the case with a soft outer shell. This means the padding is using its energy absorbing properties to slow your head down, not in being deformed by surrounding environment. When protection relies on padding alone, all the energy must be absorbed through a concentrated point of impact, rather than distributed over a large surface area. By distributing the forces we’re able to increase the duration of the impact with less helmet volume.

2: Thermoplastic occishell
All SWEET helmets utilize a 2 piece shell technology offering great fit and comfort and keeping the volume as low as possible. This is unique to all SWEET helmets, and a crucial part of the fit and performance. It’s designed to grip your skull from underneath, preventing the helmet from rolling on your head. However, its most important task is to protect your occipital lobe and surrounding hemisphere.

3: EPP liner
Crushable foams are ideal for helmets designed for one hard impact. The usual padding material in most sports helmets is EPS (Expanded PolyStyrene), which is a very effective foam for absorbing impact. The impact is absorbed as the cell walls in the foam crush on impact and slow the head down gradually.

SWEET, however use another crushable foam called EPP (Expanded Polypropylene). It’s more expensive, but it also has its technical benefits. EPP has better performance in cold weather, and a higher ‘memory’ (returning to its own shape after impact) compared to EPS. It’s often referred to as a multi-impact foam.

However, we recommend you to replace a helmet after a severe blow because there’s no way of monitoring the forces the helmet has been exposed to, and despite the foams high memory, the cell walls are still crushable if the forces are great enough (and then they won’t offer sufficient protection during the next impact.)

4: Fit Pads
A properly fitted helmet will be the most comfortable, but more importantly, the better the fit, the better the performance upon impact. Helmets offer optimal protection only when fitted and worn properly, thus, finding the right size and model is crucial. If the helmet does not fit correctly, your head will accelerate across the gap before it hits the padding, making it harder for the padding to slow down the impact. If a helmet is properly fitted, it will start to slow down the impact immediately, thus reducing the peak G force on the head.

Every SWEET helmet comes with a fitting kit consisting of several different self adhesive fitpads. This will ensure you get as good a fit as possible. There’s also a fitting manual that explains how to proceed, step by step. Note that there are circumstances where the helmet will not fit due to the difference between the shape of the helmet and the shape of your head. In cases like this, you may have to try on a few different models to find the right one.

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Sweet Trooper- awesome helmet that looks cool

Reviewer: James Leavesley, Birmingham   (10-3-2012)

I bought this helmet for my wife. Her focus was it has to look cool and mine was that it had to keep her safe. We were both extremely satisfied with the Sweet Trooper in the gloss white. It looks an awesome piece of kit with great protection. Of course there are much cheaper helmets, but the extra price is definitley worth it.

She will be enjoying this helmet for many years, looking cool and staying safe. The fit is fantastic, but unlike a lot of helmets it doesn't feel claustrophobic, which is important if this is your first helmet. This was our first experience of the Sweet brand, but have now started to look at their kit as the quality is first-rate.

I bought this helmet after many years of using other models as I liked the design, features and the brand strength of Sweet where it is obvious a lot of experienced thought has gone into their products.

It is very lightweight, has venting and comes with extra padding which can be added in a variety of places to get just the right fit. Both the side straps and at the rear can also be adjusted for shape and precise size of head. It has ear padding which also shields from the wind.I added a peak to mine and also a soft fleece tube to wrap the chin strap in so it does not freeze to my neck. The goggle strap is robust enough and the design allows many areas to stick pads for camera docks. My only fault would be that like most helmets without a removable liner it can get a bit stinky but use of a skullcap can reduce this. After a couple of close calls I'm thinking of the full face version too - now if only they did one which could be used in both configurations...

Excellent helmet, I recently took a large blow to the head while kayaking so have upgraded my helmet to the sweet trooper. It fits perfectly and is super light, makes me feel a lot safer while kayaking. I can use this helmet for both snowboarding and kayaking. This helmet is similar in specification to the sweet rocker but can be used for snowboarding also! So is worth the extra cost.

Face west did a special order for me and got the full face trooper from Norway. The attention to detail on the helmet is amazing! Very light, nice finish, can’t wait to try it out! I know I will feel safe should the worst happen!

I am so pleased I bought this helmet. It is SUPER light weight (I had to check it was actually in the box!) and very comfortable. Extra padding is provided to ensure it fits your head comfortably.

Make sure you measure your head and go with the correct sizing, this can be found on sweetprotection.com. I'm a girl and found it difficult ordering a L/XL but so glad I did as it is such a great fit. It is expensive but worth every penny in my book. I'm in love!

I bought this after struggling for a couple of years to find a well-fitting replacement for my old Pro-Tec and it's been a big success.
Fit tuning is very good provided you've got the right size shell. Venting is also good but the vent plugs are fiddly so I don't tend to change them on the hill.
The only other negative is the price.
