The Suunto X10M is the military version of the standard Suunto X10. The X10M has an all black body with a black negative LED face with red backlight. The GPS of the X10M can also be set to use the MGRS system. The features of the X10M and the X10 are the same and the X10M is just as popular with non military people for it's all black look.
The NEW Suunto X10 is the latest upgrade for the Suunto wrist top GPS unit and is a direct replacement for the Suunto X9i. The Suunto X10 offers about 30% quicker fix than the old X9i and is comparable with hand held GPS units with longer antenna. We got the first two we had out of the boxes, which to our knowledge had never been used in the UK and under pretty optimal GPS conditions the average time for the first fix was 80 seconds. The GPS receiver also tracks better in difficult conditions like heavy foliage and will hold it's signal longer.
The other main area of improvement is the battery life which again offers a 30% improvement over the X9Mi. The size, look and functions of the Suunto X10M are unchanged from the X9Mi. The only other real change is that the watch facia has been redesigned into one piece to make the X10M physically stronger.
One of the nice features of the X10M is the Suunto Track Exporter PC software which allows users to export "tracks" from their GPS units to Google Earth, where they can view their adventures anywhere on the globe with real satellite imagery. The Suunto X10 is also compatible with National Geographic TOPO!, Memory Map and Fugawi. Checkout the screen shots at the bottom of the page of an X10 tracklog exported to google earth.
The Suunto X10M has all the standard GPS features you would find in a basic handheld GPS like waypoints, route following and trackbac, all of which can be programmed on your PC and uploaded to the watch or entered directly into the X10 itself. All the software and cables you need are included with the watch.

It is not a stand alone GPS receiver which is larger, heavier and has more room for longer antenna, bigger screens and buttons. The X10 is a GPS, altimeter, digital compass and watch all in the body of a chunky watch. The X10 offers most of the features of a stand alone GPS with comparable GPS performance plus the barometric altimeter and compass, but the physical size of the X10 means that the screen is compact and the X10 needs 5 multi function buttons
and numerous menus to function properly. If you struggle with a mobile phone then it's probably not the right GPS for you, but if that sounds OK then the X10 is a fantastic outdoor tool.

When you travel in unknown terrain, it is extremely important to be able to return home safely. The compass, Track Back and Find Home functions make sure you will always find your way when you wish to head back home after an exciting but tiresome adventure.
Suunto Software
Suunto Trek Manager (STM) is software that gives you deeper understanding and better graphical representation of the data recorded and stored by Suunto X10M. Using the data cable supplied you can download and store all your track logs and data in your Trek Manager logbook or export them to 3rd party software.
