T4 Review Review by Jake, Facewest Director. I started a new fitness
regime about 6 months ago. I am 38, always been a keen skier and mountain biker
but never "really fit" . I wanted a HRM to improve my gym sessions,
and thought I would try the T4. To be honest I was a bit skeptical about the
Coach function but thought I would try it out. I have been very impressed
with the T4 firstly the TE (Training Effect) values give you an idea of the effectiveness
of the sessions. The "Coach" takes a while to figure out your routine
and stamina levels- for the first 5 or 6 sessions you are basically teaching
the T4 about yourself. After it has been set up the Coach gives recommendations
on each days workouts, attempting to maximise your benefit from each session. What
I found was: Positives 1) I found the Suunto T4 to be a great motivator.
"Suunto Coach says do a session of Training effect 4 today" So I go
to the gym, or out on my bike when otherwise I might have found excuses. Further
when I am doing a session I will generally be much more focussed at getting the
correct workout. So I put more effort in. I think owning any Heart Rate monitor
will improve your motivation, but the Coaching functions of the T4 really does
push me to do more. 2) After a few days hard effort the Suunto T4 Coach tells
you when to rest. Knowing when to rest is very important and not as intuitive
as you might think, and I believe it has improved my training. Negatives If
you don't record a session the T4 doesn't know about it. This is obvious, but
if a big part of your routine is swimming then the T4 will struggle to maximise
your training since you cannot wear the HRM whilst swimming. Overall I think
the Suunto T4 Coach is a useful function for someone like me. If you are more
professional in your training then you won't need it. But for anyone lacking motivation,
or requiring a training discipline, it will be a great purchase. |
