4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Suunto Observer - Stainless Steel/Elastomer

Reviewer: Philip, London   (10-4-2010)

The fact that I'm still using my Observer 7 years down the line from initial purchase is probably the clearest indication of how much I like this watch. The main reason it has endured on my wrist so long has undoubtedly been the durability of the metal housing and glass front. Any scratches to the stainless steel blend in with the burnished finish and are hardly noticeable. Likewise the recessed face is ultra resistant to scratches. In terms of functionality, the compass is a nice-to-have but not very practical in use and I would never forego carrying a traditional Silva base-plate with this on my wrist. The stopwatch has functionality for laps etc but this only gets me into a tail-spin of furious button pressing as I still haven't worked out what to do here. Ambient temperature can also be recorded but when the watch is on your wrist, the sensor is thrown by your body heat so is of little value when out an about. When away from the body the temperature reading (full degree increments) does seem to be very accurate when compared to other devices. However, the main draw for me was the altimeter/barometer functionality which works beautifully. By its very nature you need to supply the watch with a benchmark; either current barometric pressure at sea level or your current known altitude. You only ever operate in either barometer or altimeter mode. For multi-day walks, the protocol as I was led to believe, is to use in altimeter mode when walking then switch to barometer mode when arrived at your destination. You will probably find that you will need to re-calibrate slightly the following morning; not a problem of course if you know your altitude and will ensure another day of pretty accurate readings. Of course if you've an altimeter on your wrist you are more than likely going to want to get a quick indication of how far up and down you've gone since setting off. This is where the Observer excels. A double-press of a button at the start of the walk will start a log of ascent/descent and time elapsed. To access an update on-the-go requires only a single depress and the screen will tab though the information. On long climbs or plodding descents I have found this invaluable for keeping morale up. Stopping the timer at the end of your walk will commit the info by date to a log on your watch. Rate of ascent/descent (m/min) is also indicated. I've never used GPS but have found that the altimeter function to be invaluable with a map and compass when cloud has set in. In some situations (moving across wide contours) this can be a real asset in helping to locate yourself on the map. The battery lasts about a year, and that's with not using the compass. For those debating which configuration to choose, the plastic straps are pretty poor quality. The grey plastic on the inside tends to rot and if you wear it for extended periods of time the strap starts to pong. I've gone through 3 of these plastic straps and I am now on a leather version which, although ridiculously expensive, is very comfortable. So all in all, the Observer does what I wanted it to do rather well in a compact and obtrusive package that can be worn as a normal watch. Oh, and it's also a very accurate time piece while we are at it.

I purchased the Suunto Observer Black as an all-round ABC watch for general wear and days in the mountains. The watch looks fantastic and I cannot fault the features or build quality. Calibration is fairly straightforward and the altimeter, barometer and compass checked out well against handheld GPS readings. I have fairly small wrists but the Observer does not dominate, as the Core does, and I find it excellent as an everyday watch. The black finish gives the watch a subtle quality which has prompted comments from colleagues. One point though, if you do have small wrists the elastomer strap may be a better option as I found the steel/elastomer version not quite as flexible and does not grip as closely. However, I'm not convinced the elastomer strap will stand up to years of daily use.

I had been looking for a watch that had all the functions I need and to fit my big wrist. After some research I went for the Observer all Black and this does all I need and fits my wrist.
It has easy setup on the menu and sub menus and a card to put in your wallet as a reminder.

I have had and Observer in steel for three years. I bought it for mountaineering and skiing. The things I like about the watch are, it looks like a regular watch, and the high accuracy of the altimeter which is also very easy to calibrate. The compass is less useful and needs calibrating often, also the original strap only lasted 18 months. I had problems with the original battery compartment cover being difficult to remove to change the battery, I am pleased to say when I took it to a stockiest in France while on holiday, he had a Suunto kit that included a new cover, battery and special key for the new cover which made it very easy to remove the cover, and all for nominal cost.
I would highly recommend this watch.

Reviewer: Mike Pomeroy, Stockport   (20-11-2008)

I purchased a Suunto Observer (Steel case, resin bracelet, positive face) in October 2008. I selected this watch because I wanted the altimeter but also wanted it to look "like a watch" rather than like a dive computer. Although the case is a bit larger than the average watch I find it actually looks very good, and this despite the fact that have quite skinny wrists. In fact, I now wear it on non-hill days in preference to my "ordinary" watch. After a little practice, the watch is very easy to use. There are no superfluous functions and I find the altimeter is very accurate (so long as it is properly calibrated). I have chekced it against a GPS altimeter and accurate electronic barometer and found good agreement. I have found only two small negatives. Firstly, the contrast of the display is not the same as an ordinary digital watch. Once you get used to it it's fine. Secondly, the electronic compass needs calibrating regularly and this calibration is a bit tricky. On the whole, highly recommended.
