Product Description:

The Suunto Core is the latest wrist top computer from Suunto and is now the flagship of their outdoor range. It has taken the ever popular Suunto Vector and added some key new features and improved many of the existing ones.

The suunto Core is the most advanced wrist-top computer available for outdoor enthusiasts. It is a great watch for general outdoor and mountain use. There is a women's specific version of the Suunto Core, the Suunto Lumi.

Advanced Features:

  • The Altimeter has a new start from zero function and intelligent switching between Altimeter and Barometer modes. This function is probably one of the most important improvements for the regular user.
  • Depth measurement for snorkelling and diving has been added to the altimeter. This allows depth measurement down to 10m.
  • The Barometer has a new easy to use storm alarm to warn of fast degrading weather.
  • The Compass has improved calibration and a warning message if the compass is not being held level.
  • Setting your location in the watch now allows sunrise and sunset calculations.
  • All the watches have mineral glass screens for scratch resistance.
  • Technical Specifications and Feature List

Improvements from previous Suunto watches:

  • Clearer and more detailed display. The Suunto Core uses a much higher resolution LCD Screen.
  • Storm Warning. The Suunto Core can be set so the alarm will sound if the air pressure drops rapidly. This can warn users of poor weather approaching.
  • Software that is capable of interpreting pressure chages as being due to weather changes rather than altitude changes. This makes for a more accurate Altimeter between calibrations.
  • Depth Measurement. Can shown water depth to 10metres.

The Suunto Core is available in 12 body/face/strap combinations.

Positive faces watches (Black numbers on clear background) are easier to read in poor light (all watches have back lights).
Negative faces (White numbers on a Black background) are easier to read in bright sun conditions.

Living in the sticks I'd never actually seen the Core in real life so was concerned that it would look massive and I wouldn't be able to read the screen properly. I'm 5'7" and rather weedy but the Core looks great and no-one has made any dinner plate comments. Easy to read too. Don't know what all the fuss was about. Great customer service as always from Facewest too.

Reviewer: Robert Churcher, Laxey, Isle of Man   (13-5-2010)

A fantastic watch, I'd recommend spending the extra money and getting this over the Suunto Vector any time. Really nice to wear - very light and relatively low profile, even on small wrists.

It takes very little time to get your head around all the different functions - everything in it has been carefully thought out and evaluated, and the manual is extremely well written. Functions like the storm alarm are really clever. The ideal mountain watch to have in my opinion, a very useful tool to have with you out in the backcountry.

My only criticism would be the quality of the plastic the watch is made from, it's a little glossy and tacky, but then this makes it light and resilient...

I'd highly recommend this watch.

Reviewer: Dean Copley, Manchester   (10-5-2010)

I bought myself an all-black Suunto Core Watch in January, as I have always used a Suunto computer for scuba diving and wanted to see how their mountain equipment compared.

The watch is very light but loaded with features. Backpacking in the hills I usually carry a GPS but I now find my self consulting the Core more often than not for heading and particularly altitude.

When setting off from camp in the morning I set an altitude log going so that at the end of the day I can call up a diagrammatic profile of the day's terrain and also see the aggregate ascent and descent.

I also like the option to set the watch to switch automatically between altitude and barometric measurement when it senses altitude changes.

The "storm alarm" hasn't yet gone off in the hills and I suppose I should be grateful but I live in hope!

Reviewer: philip james, hereford   (4-5-2010)

The watch itself looks the business, all black and stealthy looking. The display is really quite easy to read, I've had no problems at all, even in direct sunlight. The functions are very easy to use, the watch isn't to big looking, and feels very light on the wrist.

Now the negatives: The strap can be awkward to undo due to the strap requiring a little manipulation to pull it out from the straps little rubber keeper, it's a tight fit plus there is a little ridge which catches on the strap. Also the buttons are very rough and can occasionally irritate the skin by rubbing against the back of the hand, smooth buttons would have been a better design.

Apart from that the watch is recommended if an ABC watch is what you require.

Reviewer: Andrew Findlow, Greater Manchester   (24-4-2010)

This is the first time that I have bought a Suunto watch, so I did some extensive research beforehand so that I could purchase the most suitable watch for me. I finally decided of the Suunto Core.

I cannot find fault with the watch’s usability or functions. However, my experience with regard to the battery life of this watch is very poor. I purchased two Suunto batteries at the same time as the watch in September 2009; I have used all three, the one that came with the watch and the two spares, in eight months. The battery that came with the watch lasted approximately 4½ months and the replacement spares 2 and 1½ months each. There does not appear to be a warning when the battery life is about to expire, the watch will just stop working with a blank screen/face.

So if you buy one of these watches then always carry a spare battery!!!!!

5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Suunto Core Alu Light Review

Reviewer: Bradley Strange, Chipping Sodbury   (13-4-2010)

I wanted an "outdoor" watch, with a few easy to use features like a thermometer, altimeter, barometer and compass for travel and general outdoors activities, which was robust but with some style as well as functions. The Core Alu-light delivered that and then some: Great features which are really easy to use (check out the Suunto website for a useful virtual demo) and which work really, really well. It's light and not that bulky so is comfortable to wear all day (but not really at night). It looks pretty smart, the display is easy to read in all light conditions and best of all it's packed with cool options which really add to it's appeal and enable it to be personalised a little. It's a serious piece of kit that's also fun, it works well and looks good. Negatives? Not sure how impact resistant the large face is, but that's not enough to stop it getting 5 stars.

What a great watch! High build quality! Useful in a number of situations. I got a problem with my original one but spoke to 'Sunnto' they replaced it with a brand new one no questions asked. Got to love that service! Will be buying another one in the future.

Reviewer: Lampros Papachristodoulou, Inoi / Sximatariou   (8-3-2010)

When I received the package and opened it I was amazed, the watch is really easy to use. Have an error in actual temperature 0,05 Celsius. It has an incredible depth meter for snorkeling, and altimeter , and when the storm alarm sounds you know after a half an hour or 1 hour the weather condition will change, it has saved me from a lot of rain on my trip with my motorcycle in the mountains or at the camp site! The negative screen is very easy to seen in direct sun!! This clock is a tool for the outdoors.

4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Suunto Core/FaceWest Review

Reviewer: Terry Walker, Woodley   (25-2-2010)

Facewest went out of their way to provide excellent independent advice on my purchase. Their email and phone communication was fast and efficient. The CORE, I have the light green which really is lightweight for it's size. After a few days you don't even know you have it on. I have very small wrists and the watch is comfortable as, or more so than the others such as the vector. It also doesn't look out of place on a very small wrist. Light background, dark characters is the way to go.... It's not a complicated watch, I now know almost all the features of by heart in only a week.
