The SnowPulse Lifebag 45 is a larger ski pack with an avalanche protection airbag system. The pack contains a nitrogen canister which inflates a large, super-tough bag around your head and shoulders providing floatation, to prevent you being buried by debris, and impact protection. By making your effective volume much larger the SnowPulse system ensures that you stay on the surface of the avalanche as large debris will tend to rise during fluid motion, this process is known as inverse segregation.

Updated for Winter 11/12, all Snowpulse bags now come with Non Refillable canisters as standard. Please read the Canister updates for 2011/12 information.

At 45 litres the Lifebag 45 is designed for regular touring and hut-to-hutting. It is large enough to carry all your touring gear and even large enough for ski-mountaineering. This is a superb choice for the regular backcountry traveller.

The Lifebag should never be the first piece of avalanche safety gear you turn to: transceiver, shovel and probe are all far more important - however if you have all of those and still want an extra level of safety then it really is the ultimate avalanche protection.

4 SnowPulse Lifebag 45L Review

This is a very well made pack in its own right. Lots of useful loops and pockets without it getting out of hand.

The extra 2kg you're carrying over a "normal" pack doesn't feel too onerous and even without carrying too much in it (such as on day tours) the pack cinches down to a compact size. The only faff I found was with the lid. The lid is sewn onto the main pack but where is crosses the airbag zip its attached with Velcro and if you put any weight in the lid pocket and don't have enough "bulk" in the main pack to support it, it seems to flop over the front and the Velcro comes open. No danger of losing anything (as its sewn) but just a put of a compromise.

I'd happily give the pack five stars if it wasn't for this (and of course the price!) but I'm guessing I'll see it as fantastic value-for-money if I ever need to use it in anger!

Getting onto planes is still a nightmare. I carried the rucksack on as hand luggage but checked the canister on in my hold luggage. I phoned the airline before hand and they said fine but when I got to the airport, no body wants to make a decision to let you on. On both legs, they had to ask the Captain whether he would accept it (which they both did). My advice would be to phone the airline and get them to send you written confirmation that its OK, print off and take the airline regulations relating to avalanche rescue equipment that come on the Snowpulse CD, and try and travel to "big" airports like Geneva who see more of these things. I surprisingly had no problems with the tubing and venturi showing up on the airport scanners but I think to try and carry on the canister in your hand luggage would freak out Security!
