A keen Adventure Racer, I purchased this item to use in conjunction with the Nordenmark MTB Extreme map board as an impulse buy. I had a slightly negative feeling towards it when it arrived due to the lack of rotating bevel and no degree markings however, after a ride up the Quantock Hills in Somerset my opinion changed.

It remained attached to the board in the most harshest and rockiest of conditions and was really simple to use. It saved time ferreting through my pockets/rucksack for my standard compass when checking my nav. Robust,cheap,light and extremely effectively, I am very happy with my purchase!

This is a simple magnetic compass with a north south needle housed in a clear plastic clip. There are probably a number of uses for it but it cannot be used for taking bearings. I bought it on the recommendation of Julian Tippett in his book on navigation as an aid to setting my map.

The clip works well and holds the compass securely. You have to be careful to ensure the compass is on a horizontal plane otherwise the needle gets stuck resulting in a false north reading. Prior to using this I would usually set the map by reference to visible features on the ground. However using the compass is useful when you don’t know your precise position. Also as the 19NL clips to the map its less fiddly and distracting than trying to use an unattached compass. Overall a useful aid to navigation.

If you have read Navigation for Walkers by Julian Tippett he recommends this compass for quick and easy navigation. I concur with his conclusion with the proviso that it is a very basic compass and cannot be used for taking bearings etc.
