The Rab Vapour Rise Alpine Jacket is a lightweight softshell ideal for hiking, mountaineering and climbing. Utilising the lightest weight fabric of
the Vapour-Rise range it is also great for faster paced activities such as biking and running in colder weather. The Vapour Rise Alpine is optimised for climbing use
with harness/rucksack compatible pockets and an under-helmet hood, together with a slightly longer cut to keep it down under your harness.
Rab Vapour Rise fabric is a two layer softshell consisting of a Micro-Pile liner and Pertex Equilibrium outer. This combination is designed to provide body temperature equilibrium and wicks moisture away from your body fast to keep you dry. The Micro-Pile inner also provides a degree of warmth, whilst the outer is wind resistant and has a DWR coating. Vapour-Rise is a really versatile system, able to be worn next-to-skin, on top of a base layer, or as part of a layering system.

This really does warrant the tag of 'versatile'. This is the item that I have worn everyday on the hill since I got it - apart from when it was in the wash...I must need another one!!
It is very light and packable when it's in the bag, but warm when it's on. Amazingly it also breathes very well so you remain comfortable in a very broad range of conditions and temperatures. In the last 6 months I have used the VR jacket for UK rock climbing, mountain walking in all weather, UK winter mountaineering , January icefall climbing in the Alps, Alpine ski touring and splitboarding in windy, cold and also hot conditions. I use it as a mid or outer layer, combined with a thermal T base, and shell outer in the bag. It is a fantastic piece of kit with a comfortable yet snug fit, good hood, and sensible pockets. Furthermore it's so easy to wash and dries really fast.

I've already got a couple of Rab's Vapour Rise Jackets in different thicknesses and I highly rate the system. I love this garment. Nice and light weight, great breathability and it packs up really small. Hood is peaked and holds shape well, high quality materials and construction throughout and perfect for 3 season active use. The pockets are chest height and central either side of the main zip, so remember there are no real 'hand warming' options on a cold day.
I have found this a remarkably versatile top. You can get away with just a short sleeved base layer under it in surprisingly cold conditions (around zero) - as long as you keep moving. With vigorous activity, the full length zip is soon used for temperature regulation. The beauty of the VR system is just how breathable it is. I also have a VR Lite pull-on top, which has thinner, less windproof side panels, which I tend to reach for as soon as conditions are more moderate. Once temperatures drop below the spring-like, however, this soon becomes not quite adequate - which is where the hoody comes into its own.
Between the two of them, most bases are covered quite effortlessly. The pockets, whilst placed high - harness-compatible - and therefore not 'hand warmer' pockets, are well placed and a good size for the beanie and gloves that I shed as I heat up. It is not particularly easy to layer fleeces etc. under it, as the brushed lining is quite loose and sticks to such layers. I have not found this a problem, as this lining makes it warm enough if active - the windproof qualities of the pertex outer go a long way to assisting in this.
A very useful piece of kit - great for walking all day.
Super well thought out jacket.
After quick free delivery from Facewest, who even phoned me the next day when I cocked up my order and got it sorted right away I was very pleased with the jacket, particularly at sale prices!
The omission of lower hand pockets and instead placing the pockets on your chest keeps all items out of the way of a harness or rucksack hip belt, I also find makes you forget about carrying things such as a phone or map as they are almost strapped to your chest and very secure.
The outer pertex fabric is super light and you really notice the weight shaving when holding the jacket up to the light! The fabric beads well in drizzle and is fairly wind resistant, just enough to take the edge of when moving fast.
Overall perfect for fast and light missions where you're working hard out on the hill.
