Rab Stretch Neo Jacket

The Rab Stretch Neo Jacket is a new jacket from Rab made using Polartec Neo Shell fabric. The Neo has been designed with the Alpine climber in mind with a medium cut combined with stretch fabric, now you have an absolute winner for exhausting days on the mountain.
Polartec Neo Shell differs from other membrane waterproof fabrics in that it allows air to flow in both directions. It is this air flow that dramatically reduces the need for pressure and heat to drive vapour molecules through the membrane. Instead the water vapour is drawn through the fabric by the air flow and natural convection, keeping you drier during high exertion activity.
The jacket has two high Napoleon pockets that will not be compromised by a climbing harness, and will easily hold maps and guides. As you would expect with any Alpine jacket the hood is fully adjustable and helmet compatible. The jacket is sealed from the elements by the Aquaguard water resistant zip, Velcro cuff tabs and double exit hem drawcord.

I took a gamble on this jacket as I bought it when it first came out - the first Polartec Neoshell jacket available in the UK. I'm glad I did, so far I've found it to be excellent. This is a no-nonsense jacket with few features, but it does have an good helmet compatible hood, and 2 waterproof zipped Napoleon pockets.
I was a little worried by the lack of pit-zips, but I've not found the need for them yet. Its impossible for me to say whether Neoshell is really more breathable than Gore-tex, but I've never worn a more comfortable shell. Its the drape of the fabric that makes the jacket a winner. The fabric is soft with a slight stretch which makes it so comfy you can almost forget its a shell. Only time will tell whether the fabric is as durable as some of the other fabrics out there, but so far the jacket seems to be ticking all the boxes. Its cheap too - about £100 cheaper than the ME Kalanka I had been considering.

The leader of the Kilimanjaro trek had one of these testing it out and gave it a great review. I had a look around and narrowed down to the Rab or Mammut Polartec Neoshell. There is a price difference of over £150 and although I like Mammut a lot, I couldn't see the differences were worth the additional cost. I've not been disappointed as the Rab Stretch Neoshell is half the weight and a better fit when out in the hills.
So far I've found Polartec Neoshell far more suited to me than Gore-Tex as it's just so breathable in comparison and I stay equally as dry.
If you're looking for a lightweight, breathable waterproof outer shell then you don't need to look any further.
