Rab Positron Jacket

The Rab Positron Jacket has a hybrid construction with both boxwall and stitch through construction. The boxwall provides optimal warmth and is used through the torso, back and hood while stitch through is used in the arms and sides of the jacket, though still providing warmth it is used principally so movement is not restricted. Filled throughout with high lofting and warm 800 fill power European goose down the Positron is a superb choice for cold conditions where you need to be able to move. The Positron has a superb adjustable helmet compatible hood that incorporates a high face baffle for additional protection. The water resistant front zip is backed with an insulated baffle preventing heat loss.

Pertex Endurance fabric offers high levels of weather resistance with a hydrostatic of 1000mm ensuring snow and spindrift are easily shed. The internal Nylon ripstop is a lighter fabric, this allows the down to loft to its full potential providing maximum insulation.

Hydrophobic down is used to provide better performance in damp conditions. This is achieved by washing in a Nikwax coating in the early stages of production. This down is NOT waterproof, but will retain its loft for longer if it gets damp, and will dry faster.

Positron is mid to heavy category weight jacket, very light for it’s category and quite packable for the warmth it provides. The chest, back and hood baffles are box wall construction, not sewn through, thus reducing heat loss. Outer fabric is 1500mm water resistant, main and pocket zips are water resistant and the down is treated. Almost as water resistant as a down jacket could be. Furthermore, the Pertex Endurance outer fabric is windproof and it is rip stop, a major advantage for a down jacket. Quality is of course high, as expected from Rab. Two draw cords at hem. two cinch cords at the front of the hood, and a Velcro tab at rear, to adjust the height of the hood. Velcro cuffs as well. All these provide great adjustability. A small disadvantage is the lack of micro fleece lining inside the hand pockets. Also due to the positioning of the hand pocket openings, when left open, they have a tendency to somehow pop open when sited, allowing inside heat to escape. Bare in mind that this is a warm, mid to heavy down jacket and not that versatile, as a light to mid category jacket can be.

Positive:

  • Ripstop Pertex Endurance outer fabric ( 1500mm water resistant and windproof as well ), hydrophobic 800fp treated down and water resistant outer zips. All these make it as water resistant as a down jacket can be.
  • Drop at back prevents exposure when leaning over.
  • Velcro adjustable cuffs
  • Very warm, two way adjustable hood, helmet compatible.
  • Box wall baffles at chest, back and hood.
  • Very good fit.
  • Micro fleece lined chin guard.
  • Two way main zip, suitable for belaying. Has an optional security button to prevent accidental opening at the bottom.
  • Attention to detail. The inside hanging loop is made from reinforced fabric.

Negative:

  • No outer chest pocket, which is however a rare option at similar jackets.
  • No micro fleece lining inside the hand pockets.

Positive and Negative:

  • Velcro tab at rear of the hood adjusts the height of the hood peak but it’s range is somehow limited. However it is preferable to a cinch cord tightener because of it’s minimal bulk: If need to sleep with the jacket on, it will not be felt behind your head.
  • Vislon Aquaguard YKK, water resistant zips with garage. Lightly insulated flap inside. Their operation is however not that smooth.
  • Wire peak hood will protect from snowdrift, rain or sun, but personally found it not that practical while wearing it around camp.
  • Zip secured inside pocket, a bit small sized however.
  • Separate stuff sack is practical. However it has to be kept inside a pocket when wearing the jacket, in order to avoid loosing it.

Tested at winter camp site at around -5C, and proved comfortably warm, while wearing underneath a midweight fleece and a baselayer. The extra Velcro tab on the inside just behind the neck, is meant to extent over the collar and pack down the bulk of the hood. Most probably no such need for that for a mountaineer, but might be useful for someone wearing it around town.

A cylindrical shaped stuff sack is provided, measuring 17x30 and will easily fit the jacket inside. Has a grab tab at rear, karabiner loop at front and cinch cord at opening. Medium size 2017 mk, weighs 628g. with stuff sack.
