The Rab Microlight Alpine for winter 2015 has a 2cm longer cut and improved chin baffle to provide even better protection making it the perfect mid or outer layer for those demanding exceptional levels of warmth, but who also want to carry a jacket with little weight and is small to pack. This is a great piece of kit for the Adventure racer, mountain walker or the lightweight alpinist.
The outer is made of Pertex Microlight fabric which is a very lightweight fabric that is highly breathable and windproof. This combination enables the Microlight Alpine Jacket to be used as either a midlayer or an outer layer depending on the conditions. The 750 fill power (US) European goose down is held closely in place by stitched through narrow baffles, ensuring enduring warmth for the wearer.
The shape of the jacket is designed to allow unrestricted movement. The down filled hood will keep your head warm and has a wired peak whilst the elasticated cuffs and hem drawcord keep spindrift out. Please remember that this is a lightweight down jacket for active use, if you require greater insulation then consider a heavier jacket.
Hydrophobic down is used to provide better performance in damp conditions. This is achieved by washing in a Nikwax coating in the early stages of production. This down is NOT waterproof, but will retain its loft for longer if it gets damp, and will dry faster.
This lightweight down jacket from Rab has been in my bag all winter and has been part of my system of keeping comfortable in cold and semi-cold conditions.
I would normally change between carrying a full on down jacket for ice climbing or when temperatures are really low, then switch to something lighter later in the winter or on mild days. With the Microlight Alpine jacket I have not needed to do this as it is small and packs into the chest pocket to stow in the bag at all times, and for the remarkable weight and packability it delivers a lot of warmth. I use one size up so that it can be pulled over the top of my mid layers and shell jacket, but I have found it is also comfortable under the shell. Beware sharp objects though - as lightweight means that if it even glimpses a sharp ice axe there will be feathers all over the mountain!

An absolutely perfect purchase. Essential to have a warm down jacket, and this was spot on. Most of the British ski mountaineers had one, or something very similar. I liked the cut and fit, and this was my surprise perfect purchase. Can't recommend it highly enough, and for an environment which did get really cold at night - especially the hut dormitories (no-one mentioned how cold they were) - was an essential piece of kit, and for many the only warm layer that was taken. a quality product which also looks extremely good in the resort at the end.
Nice jacket, good fit - really warm jacket
Great coat and delivered very fast.
I purchased the Rab Microlight Alpine Jacket for everyday use and at that it excells! Going to the office, a day at the crag or a day of ski touring. The jacket is perfect with it's small pack size. The fill of the jacket seems to be really good but for the real cold, below -10C, you need something bulkier. For me, being 179cm and 70kg, size M was perfect.
I was in need of an insulation jacket and I found it from Rab, which is a UK-based manufacturer.
It is an excellent jacket, warm and still lightweight. I have used it in winter but also in summer activities in Finland's colder summer temperatures.
It is surprisingly packable and once rolled into its chest pocket it measure 15x10x10 cm.
The insulated hood is perfect, wide enough to fit a helmet and very comfy.
The Rab Microlight Alpine is a well made, warm and very light down jacket, maybe the best ultralight downjacket under 400 grams.
Great choice for the money.
Very good product, for me is perfect, because it is very lightweight and warm. Very comfortable. This is the first one I have that is genuinely high quality, extremely warm and packs extremely light. I don't now what happen with the jacket with rain, probably, ok with soft rain. It is lightweight, and it packs really small, this is very important when you are climbing with a little back pack. Comes with a stuff sack too. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a Spring/Autumn jacket. I'm very pleased with the fit.
I have always been slightly against down jackets having done most of my walking and hiking in the UK, but then I bought this and changed my mind. It is a great multi-use, multi-country, multi-condition jacket. I now use this when I am in the Alps, pretty much living in it day and evening.
When in the UK it lives in my pack and comes out in either very wintry conditions under my shell or when we stop for lunch. For something that packs down so small it has amazing warmth. Once you pull up the zip you know that you are going to be kept nice and warm. It has a great fit meaning that you don't feel or look like the Michelin man! I would definitely recommend this jacket. Five stars from me.
