Rab Alpine Jacket Review
Reviewer: Eduardo Borraz, Madrid (23-3-2012)
I bought recently one of these Jacket after reading a lot of good things about them. I have used my new jacket a couple of times but I feel really happy with it. It works very well against wind, even with light rain and light snow: Pertex Equilibrium fabric itīs awesome and also itīs very comfortable. One of the more remarkable details itīs the hood design: simply amazing and useful.
I had another Rab windshirt that I purchased on Facewest (Rab Cirrus windtop) made on Pertex Quantum (very nice as well), Now I feel I have a perfect third layer on dry days (most common days here in Spain) with these two windshirts: Cirrus for good weather days and Alpine Jacket for cold days, especially in winter.

Rab Alpine Jacket Review

I have used the RAB Alpine jacket extensively over the last year for a variety of activities such as summer via ferrata and climbing in the alps, running on cold wet early mornings and UK walking and climbing.
It is effectively the VR jacket without the insulation, a quick drying lightweight windproof which is more robust and functional than the usual windproof top. The hood is excellent with good adjustability and a wired peak, the two large pockets are accessible wearing a harness or pack and work very well as vents. The cuffs are a simple elasticated design which allows them to be pushed up comfortably for increased cooling. Both myself and my wife have used the Alpine jacket this winter climbing in Scotland on its own and in combination over RAB VR jackets to create an extra wind/water repellent layer which worked really well on some very wet cold days on Ben Nevis. Overall a great windproof jacket which packs small and has many uses.

Rab Alpine Jacket Review

The Rab Alpine Jacket is simple in functionality, lightweight, small, packable and wind resistant. It provides a really good balance of weather protection, breathability, weight, durability and comfort. It is so great whenever a thin Pertex windshirt is simply not enough. As windshirt the Alpine jacket at its weight is little heavier than some of its competitors, but it is well featured jacket, so there is no reason to see it only as a summer jacket.
Pertex Equilibrium fabric helps keep me dry during high aerobic activities. Twin A-line pockets are deep and mesh lined to allow even more ventilation. The sleeve cuffs are simple elasticated to save weight and bulk. Hood is big, because it is designed to be pulled over a climbing helmet, but with external draw-cord you can easily adjust volume to the right size what makes it very useful and quick accessible for rapid adaptation to changing weather conditions. And another nice thing is that it can be stowed in its own pocket.
I see this jacket more as a windproof outer layer for windy but mild and mostly dry situations. But worn in combination with a lightweight fleece or Power Stretch maybe best layering it over a next to skin Power Dry mid layer, it makes very breathable and high wicking combination. I found it as an awesome winter windshirt too offering very good wind and still enough weather protection in dry cold, even in dry snow and drizzling rain as well.
With Rab Alpine Jacket you get a small packable, lightweight and universal jacket that could always find place in your backpack.
Great service. Thanks.
