The Plum Guide binding is one of the highest quality ski touring bindings available. Plum have taken the standard Dynafit TLT design, improved several of its features and produced the binding out of only the highest quality steel, CNC aluminium and plastic available. The result is a beautiful and very functional touring binding.

The Plum Guide uses the same screw pattern as the Dynafit TLT bindings and can be used as a direct replacement without redrilling. Unlike the Dynafit the Guide can be adjusted 30mm (about 4 or 5 boot sizes) because the heel block can move forward and back inside the heel plate which the Dynafit cannot. If you have changed your boot and cannot adjust your bindings enough for the new shell size you can replace the bindings without re drilling. Also if you sell your skis & bindings as a package you can now sell to people who have different sized feet to you.

The most improved features of the Plum Guide are the front lever, crampon attachment and the heel post. The front lever is longer, metal and a much better shape on the Guides, the crampon slot is all metal and much stronger than the Dynafit and the heel post has a better design of slots which make it easier to insert your pole and twist from any of the positions. The Guide binding is compatible with Dynafit ski crampons.

Brakes - The Guide bindings have no brakes. Plum are due to release a new binding model with Brakes in February 2012. The news from Plum is that the current version will not be compatible with brakes.

The bindings come complete with lightweight but basic leashes, screws, Torx key and instructions (Click here for new tab with instructions in French and English). They DO NOT INCLUDE a paper drilling template but one will be provided by Plum upon request. Plum recommend the fitting of the bindings by an experienced ski technician.

Plum Boot Compatibility

Plum bindings require the use of special ski boots which have inserts in the side and rear to accept the pins from the binding. Unlike automatic step in bindings, we need to have your boot to mount the binding, rather than just its length, so you will need to send us a boot shell which will be returned with your skis and bindings. We can pick the boot up from you, just give us a call. Determine if your boot is compatible.

These are my first set of tech bindings and I have been impressed. Beautifully made in CNC'ed aluminium for the most part, the workmanship itself is a thing of beauty. A little lighter than Dynafit Speeds but seem more solidly built than any of the Dynafit models, so in my opinion these are the best tech binding available. Skinning & kick-turning is a lot nicer on this type of binding compared to a Duke or similar, and skiing feels just as solid. I ski my alpine set ups on DIN 11 and set the Plums to the same setting, although I lock the toe lever up one click in most situations for a little extra retention. I have only had one proper fall while skiing like this and me ski released correctly.

A few issues:

Ramp angle is quite a lot (around 15mm delta), as with most tech bindings. I use 7mm toe plates to reduce this, which feels more natural to me. Overall set up ramp will depend on your boot model and this is personal preference.

Supplied leashes are rubbish, very fiddly toggle-and-loop things. I replaced these with G3 Telemark leashes which are nice to use with gloves.

No brakes available. Not a big issue for me, but may put some people off.

Check the top plate screws are tight (T8 screwdriver) but be very careful when tightening. I snapped two of these while tightening but luckily I live near the Plum factory and staff were very helpful. Likewise, check the T25 length-adjustment screws regularly, and add Locktite if possible.

Wow, these are sturdy and classy to say the least. To be honest the engineering on these is a thing of beauty. I would buy them just to frame them!

The all metal construction makes the Dynafit TLT speeds look like a dainty flower at the same weight, whereas these look like a proper workhorse of solidity. Smooth to twist at the back with an easy to use pole hole, solid click in and they just feel quality all over. The only minor gripe is that the leashes supplied are very little and would probably be better supplemented with some of the Dynafit ones. Will probably be fitting brakes as they are so light it just wont affect the overall weight too much, and provide some more security if I don’t bother with the leashes.
