Pieps DSP

Best For: Experienced users looking for advanced features.
The Pieps DSP uses advanced digital processes like signal masking, transceiver counting and multiple burial indication. As such it is suited to those with previous transceiver experience and mountain safety professionals but may be confusing to the first time user
The Pieps DSP (Digital Signal Processor) is a 100% digital, 3 antenna avalanche transceiver. The 2 main antenna are used to give directional information during the bulk of the search with the third antenna coming into play during the final few metres of the search. The DSP actually has a fourth antenna which is only used during start up diagnostics, this allows the DSP to check that it is actually transmitting properly. This feature is unique to the DSP
Standard Mode.
When the Pieps DSP detects a signal it gives the approximate distance to the victim and the direction in which the searcher needs to turn. By following this constantly updating information a rescue can easily be accomplished. In this respect it is very similar to other digital transceivers, but has a greater range than other digital units that we tested and was in fact similar to analogue units. This range has been achieved by narrowing the reception frequency, meaning that the DSP will be 100% OK with modern transceivers but will have trouble detecting old analogue beacons suffering from frequency drift. This is a fault with the old beacons not the DSP but some transceivers have not squeezed their range because of this. The DSP can be used to test old beacons for drift during your daily checks.Digital Signal Processing.
The Pieps DSP also offers more advanced features for multiple burial situations. The DSP displays an icon for each different signal received (1, 2, 3 and 3+). It will lock onto the strongest signal and guide you to that victim. You can then mark the signal and the DSP will ignore it and allow you to move onto searching for the next victim, leaving others to dig up the person you have already found.Scan Function
The DSP also has a scan function which will tell you how many signals it receives at various distances, e.g. the number of victims within 5 meters, the number of victims within 20 meters and the number of victims within 50 meters. This gives the searcher a greater understanding of the overall search scenario. During the scan function the range is reduced and the frequency window widened to accomadate old drifted beacons. If any are detected then the DSP stays in this mode.Intelligent Transmitter.
The DSP receives signals and transmits your signal at the same time. If it detects that another transceivers signal is overlapping yours (which confuses digital beacons in search mode) it will adjust the timing of your signal to eliminate this problem.About You.
It should be remembered that these extra digital features are valuable extra tools for an experienced searcher, but they could also confuse somebody who is not familar with their use. This beacon is not aimed at the once a year user who has not done any practise.Pieps DSP Features & Specifications:

Pieps DSP Review
Reviewer: Darren Valentine, Leicester (12-12-2011)
Having borrowed this transceiver on previous ski trips from friends, so I knew what I was getting. It has a very definite off/search/transmit toggle which can easily be pushed back into transmit if caught in a secondary. The range is fantastic as is the pin point. The mark functionality is easy to use, and the ability to properly cope with multiple burials gives that bit more confidence for going off with bigger groups.
The only issue I may have with it is the new holder. This is quite stiff and a little slow to get out with gloved hands, though I have heard that this softens up over time.

This is an easy to use transceiver. I practice with a couple of old analogue models, which it picks up with no problem (e.g. no drift). The Pieps DSP is much faster at locating than the analogue ones - probably by a couple of mins. While it's expense, ask yourself how much you'd pay for these 2 mins in a real situation? Yes it's easier to take a glove off to switch to receive, but you need to do this to get it out from where it's held. This is basically a light weight easy to use device. The only down side is the harness - which is reasonably heavy (145g) and it's tricky to pull it out - not ideal in a real situation, thus it looses one star.
I did have a couple of queries so emailed Facewest and got an answer by reply - first class, many thanks.
Hope I never have to use it for real!

I chose the Pieps having used their old analogue system and their long standing history in transceivers. Having familiarised myself with the simple controls I took it to a transceiver park. The more advanced digital model took a little bit of getting used to, once understood it was simple to use resulting in very quick multiple person searches. Instructors seem nervous about using it due to the overly complex screen, and I can see why if you were to just pick it up.
It is comfortable to wear, light and buttons stay in place through robust movement. All round good product, only improvement would be making it easier to use with gloves on (a little fiddly).

I like this transceiver very much. Although never having had to use a transceiver for real I have practiced with a number of different units. I find this one very easy and intuitive to use.
If you don’t know about the multiple burial options you aren’t going to use them and you don’t need to. In simple rescue scenarios, I find this works better than the Tracker and is just as easy. If you do want to start using the advanced search options these are also very easy to employ. The transceiver comes with a comfortable harness, however I like the option of having it clipped into an internal pocket where it is small enough to not be obtrusive and still easily deployed.
Also a note on battery life, I managed to use it all day turning on when I left the house/hut and forgetting until taking it off at night and only had to change the batteries once in the season, not bad I thought.
