Petzl TacTikka XP Review

Awesome and heavy duty no-nonsense headtorch. I have deployed to Afghanistan with this torch and initially planned to use it as a back-up torch to my SUREFIRE. However it is now my main torch as it has variable brightness and can easily flick from red to white light - it also uses easily available batteries. Negatives: None yet!

I bought this headtorch as a present and upgrade to my boyfriends old but much used Petzl Micro. Not for desert ops, just for camping and cycling holidays!
The best thing about this torch is the red filter as it instantly converts it into a very versatile bike light so no need to carry extra gear. The red filter also maintains some night vision which was great at not disturbing other sleepy campers. Secondly, the low battery indicator means no unnecessary carrying of batteries. Lastly, having the booster beam made picking routes along paths/through trees and tent finding easier.
Downsides are the fiddly clip that only holds 1 of the 3 extra filters?? All in all its a little gem.

I bought this headtorch after much deliberation over the various Petzl ones available for a climbing trip in North Wales. I had another cheap thing but it was too heavy and required a ton of batteries. I haven't found a single bad thing about the light, though I would say it is worth buying the pouch for about £7 with it, as it will prevent you loosing the other filters (although you can keep one on the headband) and allows you to keep it handily on your belt, or at least prevents it being crushed at the bottom of your pack. The red filter has proved the most useful, particularly when cooking in the dark as you're not blinding everyone else all of the time. Shame the same couldn't be said for their torches. The boost also proved to be useful when trying to locate things, such as the tent. -Quite handy.
This is the best price I found, and it arrived in next to no time. Get one!

Petzl TacTikka XP Review

I recieved my XP in super quick time and in perfect condition.
I've had various head torches before and have found them perfect when camping and night walking. My previous was Petzl Myolite 3. A much larger beast with the batteries opposite the torch behind the head. When that eventually packed up a friend suggested that I try the XP.
The Headtorch arrived in a standard plastic packaging with 3 AAA Duracell batteries and an assortment of coloured filters for the lens. I had opted for the camo version and it merges nicely with the rest of my gear.
Compared to the Myolite 3 this is a very small headtorch, the batteries are contained within the unit itself at the front. This does make the unit considerably heavier, but not uncomfortably so. The batteries are inserted by tilting the unit forward and unclipping the plastic cover from one side. This took some time at first as I was worried about snapping the plastic clip off, but it seems to be well made and survived ok.
There are two buttons on top ,the left is the 'control' button Which gives max light on one press, med light on two and low on three, futher pressing gives flashing and then finally turns the unit off.
The right hand button is the 'boost' button which when pressed and held gives a burst of very bright light for 20 secs or so before reverting to max light.
It all seems to work very well and fits together snuggly so it should survive normal rain ok, though I won't be dropping it in a lake to test its waterproofness.
It has 4 coloured filters supplied (red, green, blue and white) with the red fitted. The filter system is simple to use and simply slides across in front of the lens, changing the filter was just a little fiddly and like the battery cover, is secured behind a plastic cover but this time on the front of the unit. There is also a plastic filter case attached to the headband containing a white filter which I found excellent for map reading as it removes the white spot from the light.
One problem though, the clip on the filter holder holding the diffuser in place is very strong and took a lot of effort to release the diffuser, and is not something that could be done with gloved hands.
If they wanted to improve it I would suggest making the filter case longer to accommodate all the filters as the spare ones are loose and I'm sure will get lost eventually.
There is also a battery light that shows the battery condition as it runs down, but I haven't seen it on yet as my batteries are still new.
All in all im very pleased both with the XP and the price from Facewest.
