Petzl Elios

The Petzl Elios is one of the most popular climbing helmets available and is a common sight at any UK crag. What makes Elios helmet so versatile are the ventilation slots on either side that can be closed, ideal for hot days and cold winter routes.

The Petzl Elios has a high density expanded polypropylene foam headpiece on the inside and a thermoformed ABS outer shell, providing both lightness and strength. The ergonomic shape provides maximum protection while ensuring a clear field of vision. Double adjustment buttons at the rear and an adjustable chinstrap allow for efficient and quick adjustments. Four exterior hooks and a groove in the outer shell are designed to attach and secure a headlamp.

Featured Pro Review

I use this as my everyday helmet, its seen loads of abuse in the mountains over the past two years but still looks new. I prefer a plastic shell helmet in the Alps rather than the foam type like the Petzl Meteor. Foamies don't stand up to being rammed in your rucksack, sat on, dropped, peppered by ice and rock or used as a sandwich holder. The foam type helmets like the Meteor are great for multi pitch rock but when ice or mixed climbing in the alps the last thing you want is the helmet exploding from an ice bomb direct hit then no helmet for the remainder of the route. So bearing this in mind I use my Elios, for Alpine, Ice and Mixed then change to my super light comfy Meteor when cranking on the rock.

I purchased this helmet mainly for alpine and ice climbing, and to replace my old Petzl Ecrin Roc (used since 1994!). Light and strong, seems to be a durable and well vented helmet (the sliding ventilation slots are a great idea). Easy to get a good fit, but the headband adjustment system (two push-buttons) is more difficult to use in action, or with gloves, than classic wheel-system adjustment.

Facewest service is great! I received my helmet even before expected!

I inherited my flatmate's old Elios which he must have had for years but still going strong. Adjustments are good, comfort is excellent, quick and easy to go bigger with a hat underneath. Sits quite high on the head but I guess all climbing helmets do. And looks-wise it's better than others.

Really good all round Helmet, easy to get a good fit and simple to adjust if you are wearing a hat or nothing underneath. Easy to attach headlamp securely under the grey tabs for early starts/late finishes. Great all round!

A great helmet at a great price. I would have rewarded 5 stars although it is an excellent helmet I find it doesn't fit all head shapes. I own one of these and my climbing partner has a black diamond half dome. I fit in his half dome and my Petzl but he cannot wear my Petzl for more than half an hour without getting a sore head. on the plus side it is very durable as I have taken several hits and it still seems to have plenty of life yet.

Very durable, light and well vented. The adjustment wheel can be used with only one hand, good adjustment on the chinstrap as well. Overall a great helmet, easy to get a proper fit and after a little while you don't even notice you have it on.

Really great helmet. I borrowed one of these from a friend to replace mine. Wish I'd bought one myself now. It's light but really durable (I've bashed mine loads).

The vents are really good for summer, especially when you heat up. But with a beanie on they're not too cold for winter use, which is a mega advantage of this helmet. The 4 little clips are really handy to attach a head torch to when you've been benighted on the mountains. The fit is comfy and the adjuster at the back is simple and easy to use. The price and choice of colours is also what make it stand out to me.
