Petzl Altitude Harness

The Petzl Altitude Harness is an ultra lightweight mountaineering or ski touring harness perfect for fast and light adventures. Considering the tiny weight of the Altitude it's got a surprising number of features. Wireframe technology means the waist and leg loops are wider than you'd expect, plus there are 4 integrated gear loops - note these are literally loops of fabric, you certainly couldn't get more than a couple of carabiners on each one - but that's not the point of this harness. The leg loops can be unbuckled allowing the harness to be donned with skis or crampons on and each leg loop has a keeper with siliconised interior to secure an ice screw so it's not flapping around off a gear loop - a great little innovation for a lightweight harness and perfect if you're skiing with ice screws.

I purchased the Petzl Altitude harness as a lightweight harness for ski-touring. I have not used the harness for ski-touring yet, but the weight, small pack-size, and buckle release leg loops meet my requirements.

With a 25" waist, the S-M size is only just small enough for me, even with bulkier ski-touring clothes. Anyone with a smaller waist could find that the waist band is cinched up so tightly that the belay loop sits to the wrong side of the waist buckle - the instructions indicate that this is unsafe (presumably will cause the buckle to release). I have previously tried the Black Diamond Couloir and Mammut Zephir Altitude harnesses and the smallest sizes for these harnesses are far too big for me. A significant part of my rating is attributable to sizing, given that the Petzl Altitude currently seems to be the only lightweight ski touring harness suitable for smaller people.
