Ortovox 240 Light PFA

The Ortovox 240 Light PFA is a great compromise between price and weight. At 240cm it is the ideal length to make probing as fast, comfortable and effective as possible. The PFA system ensures that deployment is quick and easy, simply flick out the probe and pull the string and the conical tube connectors do the rest.

I'm a regular off-piste skier, and have been using this probe for several years (and have just bought another one for my wife).

This is an easy-to-use probe, with a sturdy point, easy to assemble with gloves-on, and easy to collapse and store. The 'hold here and pull' tensioning cord is much easier to operate than the 'pull the knot through the slot' type - and there's a little clip so the pull-handle doesn't swing-around when you're trying to find that buried backpack - or your buddy. However, then it's cold, the clip becomes stiff, and I'm nervous about using the clip (and resort to old-school holding the cord!). The bright green is easy to see (both sleeve and probe) - and the depth markers are easy to understand. It's not the lightest on the market - but, frankly - by the time you've put your lunch in your pack, there's no practical weight advantage or disadvantage.

Collapsing the probe is easy - hold the place where it says 'hold here', and pull the lifter - and hey-presto - the probe can be collapsed - again, in gloves. Reopening the storage sleeve is less easy, especially if you've just spend 10 minutes getting cold on the mountain - but this is a very minor criticism.

Overall, this is a good probe, is not too heavy, not too expensive, it's easy to use, and easy to store. And that's why I bought another one!

Used this all of last season in my avalanche training and assessments. The length is a great compromise, anything longer will be easier to break, heavier and you're unlikely to dig 2.4m of snow in 15 minutes. Not particularly heavy despite not being a carbon fibre one, if looking to drop weight anywhere, I'd be tempted not to do it on your probe.

I did find that the pull cord slackened while using, so had to re-pull the blue thing every few times I probed. Not cool. Comes with nice bag/sack that also fits a shovel handle. Other than the cord, there is nothing I would change about this product, fast to put together, strong and light.
