Ortovox 240 Carbon PFA

The Carbon 240 PFA is Ortovox's lightest full length probe for recreational use. The PFA (Patented Flash Assembly) makes the probe very quick and easy to deploy, it just takes one pull. The Probe is made from carbon fibre sections threaded with kevlar cord which is the lightest construction method. The only way to make the probe lighter is to make it shorter. Depth is marked on the outside of the probe in 5cm divisions.
The Carbon 240 PFA probe is designed for the users who will always carry their probe but probably only put it together a couple of times a year and want to keep weight to a minimum without sacrificing probe length. Very light and great value for money.

Fortunately I have not had to use it yet, the probe is excellent quality, when pulled out of the bag it locks together very quickly with a flick of the T bar cord. It comes with its own carry bag and does exactly what it says in the description. Ortovox are an excellent brand for snow safety equipment.

Good quality and after falling on my old probe last season and putting a slight bend in it I am amazed by the comparison in weight.
Only sight disappointment is it would be better if the sections were slightly smaller for a better fit in my backpack. Other than that its a great bit of kit.

I have been completely buried in snow, albeit during an exercise on an avalanche awareness course. The trench was 5 foot deep and coffin shaped, 3 layers of shoveling later the outside world is muted to stunning silence.
At this point I made up my mind when it comes to avalanche safety kit money is no object, save and get the best. This is it! Ultra light-weight, and PFA ( Patent-Flash-Assembly ) is so quick it boggles the mind. The foam handle is an asset in gloved hands and it's equally quick to stow after use.
The reason I only give 4 not 5 stars is as with all probes I wish the sections could be smaller, that said it still fits easily inside my touring bergen. Twin this with a BD Deploy 3 shovel and it's the lightest, strongest touring/backcountry combo you'll find. Brilliant bit of kit

How do you review a product that your hope you never have to use in anger. The probe is as detailed in the product description, it is very light, and locks together with a simple pull of the t-piece and a shake of the probe.
The foam handle which is a feature of the Ortovox probes, makes for a comfortable grip, but I am not sure how useful it would be when actually carrying out a search.
One point not mentioned in the product description is that the probe comes with a nylon (or similar) carry case, with a spring loaded openning. This ensures that the probe does not get entangled with the rest of your packs contents.
